The story takes place in depression era Dodson, Mississippi. Owen Legate (Redford) comes to town to fire many of the local rail yard employees. Natalie Wood plays Alva Starr, a pretty town flirt who finds herself stuck in this small town and very much attracted to the handsome stranger. The story is Tennessee Williams flavored in it's passion and emotion.
