The Sims: Bustin' Out is the second title in The Sims console series. Bustin' Out was released for the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and N-Gage in the fourth quarter of 2003. As the title suggests, Sims can get out of the house to visit other locations such as Shiny Things Lab or Casa Caliente. There are two modes. Bust Out Mode which has mission based gameplay and Freeplay Mode which is open-ended gameplay very much like the original The Sims PC game.

Story

Malcolm Langrabb has "had it with the whole town" and is rampaging about the neighborhood stealing people's property for reasons unknown. Your task is to complete each career track and move into Malcolm's Mansion.

Locations

There are various locations you can visit throughout the course of the game. As you advance through the game clearing the house objectives, you will unlock new locations to visit, as well as new objects and social interactions.

Game Boy Locations

Different locations are used in GameBoy Advance. These are: Uncle Hayseed's House, The Barn, the Clock Tower, the Waterfront Villa, Imperial Estates, and the secret Paradise Island.

Career housing

In the PS2 version, you start at Mom's house, pick a career, then head through different houses, depending on what career track you took. There are several levels, and you move on usually when you earn two promotions, the exception being Mom's House and Malcolm's Mansion. Once you are finished with promotions and optional goals in the house you are on, pick the house from the next level that is home to your career track level and move out! Note that no promotions can be gained if you are not in the correct house for your career level, even if you have all the neccesary skills and friends.

    • Level 1-Mom's house
    • Level 2- Dudley's Trailer, Mimi's house
    • Level 3- Toane's gym, Studio 8, Goth Manor
    • Level 4- Clubb Rubb, Casa Caliente, Shiny Things Labs
    • Level 5- Tinsel Bluffs, Pixel Acres, The Octagon
    • Level 6- Malcolm's Mansion
  • Mom's House

Level 1 Location

You start your life at Mom's House where you live with Mom. The tasks at this house are simple, and are all about filling your motive bars from red to green and finding your first job. The rewards for clearing the objectives are money and your scooter so you can move into either Mimi's Place or Dudley's Trailer depending on the career track you have selected. If you befriend Mom, you will receive the interaction "Nag About House".

  • Mimi's Place

Level 1-2 location

Mimi's Place is much larger than her brother's, Dudley's Trailer. You will move here if you take up Counter Culture, Movie Star or Fashion Victim career tracks. The main tasks here are to fix her coffee machine, earn cookery skills, befriend Mimi and gain 2 promotions. When you have been promoted twice, depending on your career track you are on, can take you to Goth Manor or Studio 8.

  • Dudley's Trailer

Level 1-2 location

The main tasks for this residence are to tidy up the house mess, befriend Dudley and earn promotions. Dudley's trailer is much smaller than his sister's house. You move in here from Mom's House if you are in Mad Scientist, Paramilitary, Jock or Gangster career tracks. When you earn two promotions here in your designated career track, you can move in to Toane's Gym or Goth Manor depending on the career track you are on.

  • Goth Manor

Level 2-3 location

Something is not quite right at the rather mysterious and mystical Goth Manor. Home of Bella and Mortimer Goth. In this location, you will develop your career track further as a Mad Scientist or as a Movie star. You must perform a seance in this level to banish the ghosts that haunt the Goths. From here you will trek to Club Rubb or Shiny Things Lab to further develop your career position.

  • Toane's Gym

Level 2-3 location

Toane's gym is home to both Max and Goldie Toane, who are late with the rent and lose their treadmill and climbing wall as a result of Malcolm's "repo" service. Develop your skills in both the Gangster and Jock career tracks here using the equipment. A main goal here is to hold a membership party and sign 4 members to bring money to the gym once more, to avoid future "repossesions" by Mr. Landgrabb. From here, move to Clubb Rubb or Casa Caliente.

  • Studio 8

Level 2-3 locatoin

Welcome to Studio 8, where Artie Fical and Charity Grant keep this small gallery functioning...but barely. They plan to throw a huge art opening by rearranging the art, but they need a little help. Career Sims on the Counter Culture and Fashion tracks go here. Once finished, move out to Clubb Rubb or Casa Caliente.

  • Clubb Rubb

Level 3-4 location

Clubb Rubb is the hippest spot in town, an old warehouse turned into a club by Bing Bling and Mona Lott. The locals want you to help throw the ultimate DJ party, but are missing a dance floor, thanks to Malcolm's mental breakdown. Clubb Rubb is home to the Movie Star, Fashion, and Jock tracks, and it is here, along with other level 4 houses, that the player is presented with optional goals involving marriage and having children. Once finished here, pack up and shove off to Tinsel Bluffs.

  • Casa Caliente

Level 3-4 location

A 60's style love shack, residents Randy Hart and Paisly Rainbow are all about having a good time and partying, with the occasional WhooHoo with multiple partners. Members of the Gangster and Counter Culture apply here, and the goals all revolve around love, romanticism, marriage, and WhooHoo. When your stay here is done, move onto Pixel Acres.

  • Shiny Things Lab

Level 3-4 location

A cold, stark, and silvery place, Shiny Things Labs is owned by Malcolm Landgrabb and is home to Mikino Nadia and Vaughn Braun, creator of the Vaugn Braun recliner, the best recliner in the game. Vaugn wants to have a gnome launch party, but also stresses goals like marriage and childbirth. Career tracks like Paramilitary and Mad Scientist make home here and then both move out to The Octagon.

  • Tinsel Bluffs

Level 4-5 location

Tinsel Bluffs, a "castle in the sky", is located on the side of a...bluff... and is home to both Humphrey Hawkes and Fanny Adore. Both SitCom stars, these two are in need of a movie idea. Level 5 houses all have a goal having to do with Malcolm and the goal here is to convince him to hive the player a movie role. Use either talent, intimidation or relationship scores to convince him. Residents here practice the Movie Star, Fashion, and Jock tracks. Move out to Malcolm's Mansion once finished here.

  • The Octagon

Level 4-5 location

The Octagon, a leftover Cold War bunker, is home to the Paramilitary and Mad Scientist career track and residents General Paine and Maxime Powers. Along with other military goals, like shutting down hackers, bio weapons, and anti-war protesters, the player's main goal here will be to "eliminate" Senator Landgrabb. When finished, head to Malcolm's Mansion.

  • Pixel Acres

Level 4-5 location

Pixel Acres is the local nudist colony and residents Ying Yangst and Chase Skurtz are all about being free. They also plot to somehow get Malcolm to "get free" and then bust him for indecent exposure...in a nudist colony? When members of the Gangster and Counter Culture tracks finish business here, they go to Malcolm's Mansion.

  • Malcolm's Mansion

Level 5-6 location

The final level. Your hard work has paid off and, once Malcolm is booted by Mom, you focus on upgrading your mansion by 20,000 simoleons and mastering as many careers as possible to fill up that mysterious fountain out in the front yard...

Online Play

The Sims Bustin' Out supports Playstation 2 online play, with dial-up and broadband access available. The USB Headset can also be used, and it did not use a "Talk" button. You could also swap unlockables from story mode online. Online play continued from roughly 6 p.m. one day to about 7 a.m. two days later. The host was in whatever house they were in Bust Out mode, and all NPCs living in the house were controllable. However, your online "friend's" main character cannot be controlled by you, but their family members can be. The Guest only had their main character. The guest knew no one in the neighborhood upon arrival. Hosts are not allowed to leave the house. In addition, the host or guest is not allowed to have children, although children born previously are allowed to grow up. Build/Buy Modes are disabled.

However, the server that supported The Sims: Bustin Out's Online play has been taken down. EA made this statement, presumably 90 days before, as stated in the legal notices;

"Dear 2004 EA Online members, We have some important upcoming changes to notify you of regarding the 2004 EA Online service for the PS2 version of The Sims: Bustin' Out:

You may continue to play the game up until the closure date, although certain community programs may begin to close down prior to that date. All of us at EA Games would like to thank you for participating in such a special online community and hope that your enthusiasm for these games will continue on beyond this game experience with some of our updated titles.
