  • 1904: Born in Breslau (Silesia/Poland).
  • 1924-35: Served in the Seventh Cavalry Regiment.
  • 1935-37: Attended the German officers' War Academy.
  • 1937-Dec. 39: Third General Staff Officer (Ic-Intelligence) 3rd Corps. 1939: Polish campaign: served along Vistula River to Warsaw (? in Kluge’s 4th Army from N.E. Germany driving southeast towards Warsaw?).
  • 1940 June-1940 Aug: First General Staff Officer (Ia-Ops.) 197th Infantry Division during France campaign.
  • 1940 Sept-1941Feb: Third General Staff Officer (Ic-Intelligence) First Army.
  • 1941 Mar-May: Third Gen. Staff Officer, Second Army during the Balkan campaign.
  • 1941 June-1942 Sept: Intelligence Officer to Field Marshall Rommel. Third General Staff Officer (Ic-Intelligence) in Panzergruppe/Panzerarmee Afrika (Rommel). Participated in the battles of: Tobruk, Gazala, El Alamein.
  • 1942 July - Sept: Acting Operations Staff Officer to Rommel (N. Africa).
  • 1942 Sept-Oct 42: recovering from exhaustion in a military hospital at Garmisch.
  • 1942 Nov-1944 May: Chief of General Staff, 48th Panzer Corps in Russia: in the battles around Ukraine, Stalingrad, Kursk, Kiev.
  • 1942 Dec: As Chief-of-Staff, 48th Panzer, made frequent radio contact with Gen. Paulus to learn of his battle plans in holding Stalingrad -- where Hitler had ordered Paulus to hold.
  • 1944 May-Sept: Chief of General Staff, Fourth Panzer Army (Gen. Balck); around Baranov (Vistula River) in Russia.
  • 1944 Sept-Nov: (Eastern France): Chief of General Staff, Army Group G (under Gen. Hasso von Manteuffel, who was commander of the Fifth Panzer Army). Participated in the Campaign of the West (front line between Luxembourg & Switzerland) in battles around Nancy, Metz, Arracourt, and Alsace-Lorraine.
  • 1944 Dec: Due to the retreat of the German forces, various officers (including von Mellenthin) were relieved of their commands. He was retired to Officers’ Pool of High Command Army. However, Gen. Guderian obtained his restoration to duty in late Dec.
  • 1944 Dec 28-1945 Feb: Attached to the 9th Panzer Division during Campaign of the West (and during "Battle of the Bulge"). Served north of Bastogne.

1945 Mar-May: Chief of General Staff to Gen. Hasso von Manteuffel’s Fifth Panzer Army; Campaign of the West: defense of western Germany throughout the Rhur and around Cologne.

  • 1945 May 3: While retreating eastward, he was captured by the British at Hoxter (Weser River).
  • 1955: Wrote: Panzer Battles.
  • 1977: Wrote: "German Generals of World War II" (Univ. of Oklahoma Press, or Norman Press).
  • 1984: Co-authored: “NATO Under Attack” (Duke Univ. Press).
