Kamen Rider Kabuto (仮面ライダーカブト, Kamen Raidā Kabuto), Masked Rider Kabuto in English,[1] is a Japanese tokusatsu superhero television series. It is the sixteenth installment in the popular Kamen Rider franchise of tokusatsu programmes. It is a joint collaboration between Ishimori Productions and Toei. The series is currently being broadcast on TV Asahi, and its first episode aired on January 29, 2006. The series represents the 35th anniversary of the Kamen Rider franchise, as indicated by a notice at the beginning of the pilot episode reading, in Japanese, "Kamen Rider 35th Anniversary Production".
The series' primary theme is the use of "Forms"—That is, each Rider has both a sleek "Rider Form" and a bulky, defensive "Masked Form".

Other characters

Villains
A list of all worms that have made an appearance in the show and how they were defeated.
Zecters
They are a mobile system which affects space-time. They appear to be sentinent, "living" creatures, as shown at times such as the TheBee Zecter leaving Yaguruma on its own, and the Kabuto Zecter once buzzing over to the Bistro la Salle restaurant and tapping on a window to get Tendou's attention, and once later slicing ramen noodles for soup to alert Tendou to a Worm attack. Jaunting from the ZECT headquarters it appears instantaneously to selected personnel but, for example, the Gatack Zecter attacked the unchosen people who wanted it. Although as sentinent beings, Zecters can fail to recognize it's true owners. The Drake Zecter failed to tell the difference between the real Daisuke and the fake Daisuke and the Zecter went to the fake since he was holding the Drake Grip. After Kagami became TheBee, he was marked with the TheBee crest on his chest; the same goes to Kageyama. This suggests that those chosen by the Zecter bear the crest of the particular Zecter on their body, however it is unclear if Tendou, Yaguruma (as TheBee), Kazama, or Kamishiro were marked in this way, or whether Kagami was re-marked as Gatack. The Native have the ability to become riders themselves. The Red Shoes device was built into Kabuto Zecter and Gatack Zecter. It forces the users to fight worms against their will and can drive them insane if they do not.
The Zecters have two features:
- Cast Off/Put On System
The Cast Off System is used (while in Masked Form) to cast off the Masked Form armor and change into Rider Form. When the Rider "Casts Off", and if someone is in close proximity and fails to get out of the way (either by moving to another spot or ducking) in time, that someone is violently sent back and gets hurt by the flying pieces of armor.
The Put On System is used (while in Rider Form) to put on the Masked Form armor and change back into Masked Form. "PUT ON!" will be carried out if the Zecter is returned to the state in which it was before Cast Off was carried out. Put On can restore Masked Form either in part (Kabuto reforms the armor for his left forearm to use as a gauntlet for blocking the Sasword Yaiber in a duel with Sasword) or as a whole (both TheBee and Drake agree to Put On in an attempt to fight Ucaworm).
- Clock Up System
Once in Rider Form the Rider can use the Clock Up System to go into Clock Up Phase. This increases his/her speed, by decreasing the speed of time around the user, in order to catch up to, if not surpass, the speed of molten Worms. When the Clock Up System is active, it exclaims "CLOCK UP!" and when it powers down, it exclaims "CLOCK OVER!"
Hyper Clock Up is shown to have the ability to reverse the flow of time and simultaneously slow down time around the user. It is unknown what other properties it may have.
Note The Rider transformation cancels when the Zecter is seperated from the 'Henshin' device

Guest Stars
- Being the 35th year of the Kamen Rider franchise, Kabuto has had its fair share of Kamen Rider and Tokusatsu alumi:
- Tomohisa Yuge, who played Masato Mishima, has appeared in Kamen Rider Ryuki as Goro Yura. In that case, he is a few of those who played two different Kamen Riders in two different series.
- Masato Uchiyama, who acted as Shun Kageyama, has appeared in Kamen Rider 555 as Yoshio Kobayashi (Rabbit Orphenoch) and Ultraman Nexus as Ren Senju/Ultraman Nexus (Junis Blue).
- Riku Kagami's actor also makes an appearance in 2005's Kamen Rider The First in the first few minutes where his limo is attacked by SHOCKER's Spider creature. With Hongo Takeshi appearing as himself in Kabuto some fans has speculated that Riku was himself in Kamen Rider The First as well.
- Kohei Murakami, who played IT President Uemura in episode 3, is well known as Masato Kusaka/Kamen Rider Kaixa, from Kamen Rider 555.
- Mika Kikuchi, who played Yuki Tamai/Lanpyrisworm in episode 3, is well known as Koume "Umeko" Kodou/DekaPink, from Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger.
- Atsushi Ogawa, who played Shogo Azuma/Pulexworm in episodes 5-6, is well known as Tetsuya Sawaki from Kamen Rider Agito, and Masahiko Minami from Kamen Rider 555.
- Masaya Kikawada, who played Takeshi Hongo/Kamen Rider 1 in Kamen Rider the First, 2005's movie remake of the original Kamen Rider story, makes an appearance. He comments on Tendou who is hungrily staggering through the streets in episode 14. According to an issue of Hyper Hobby (Magazine), he wasn't appearing as a random extra but rather in character as Hongo. The bike he was riding in the scene is in fact his New Cyclone.
- Kenzaburo Kikuchi, who played Koji Iguchi/whiteWorm in episode 14, is well known as Shiro Kanzaki from Kamen Rider Ryuki.
- Hitomi Miwa, who plays Rena Mamiya/Ucaworm, was Lady Gozen from Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger.
- Shinnosuke Abe, who played Ichiro Ikesu/Culexworm in episodes 29-30, is well known as the anti-hero Logia, from Gransazer, but beforehand, he appeared as a cousin of Kiba in episode 1 of Kamen Rider 555.
Trivia
- Kabuto is the first New Generation Rider to shout the famous line "Rider Kick" before performing Kamen Rider's signature move. Though he uses a different kind of kick, other New Generation Kamen Riders never called their finishers as Rider Kicks (although Rider Kick is the name of Kamen Rider Agito's Ground Form finisher). Kabuto is the fourth Kamen Rider to have these lines accompanied by Kamen Rider 1, Kamen Rider 2, and Kamen Rider BLACK.
- Actors Hiro Mizushima and Yuuki Satou have worked together before; both have appeared in the Gokusen live-action TV series.
- Actor Hidenori Tokuyama sang the theme songs "For Real" and "Still Time" for Genso Maden Saiyuki.
- Actor Kazuki Katou appears in the musical version of The Prince of Tennis.
- Actors Tomohisa Yuge, Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi and Hirotaro Honda have worked together before in the Sarutobi Sasuke Yami no Gundan movie.
- Tomohisa Yuge is the second actor in the Kamen Rider franchise to play two different Riders in two different series. He was Zolda for Episodes 10 and 50 of Ryuki and TheBee for Episode 16 of Kabuto. The first actor to do this was Jun Yamasaki who portrayed Kamen Rider G3 and Kamen Rider Faiz in separate series for a few episodes.
- The Tokyo Dome hosted a Double Hero Festival in honor of not only the Kamen Rider Series' 35th Anniversary, but also the 30th Anniversary of the Super Sentai Series. A Super Sentai stage show, starring the core Boukengers, was hosted on July 22, while a Kamen Rider stage show, starring the actors for Souji, Arata, Hiyori, Sou, and Daisuke, was hosted the next day. The Dome was divided into a Show Stage, a Super Sentai Zone (further divided into a Red Hero Zone, a Giant Robot Zone, and a Supermachine Zone), a Kamen Rider Zone (further divided into an Ishinomori Era Rider Zone, a Post-Ishinomori Rider Zone, and a Superbike Zone), a Shop, a Sponsor Booth, and a Play Area.
- Kamen Rider Kabuto is the first Kamen Rider series to actually use the English term "Masked Rider" (although "Masked Rider" is almost always used as the official English title of the franchise) in the show, specifically for the "Masked Rider System", the "Masked Rider Project", and the "Masked Form" of the Rider's suits.
- The Hyper Sword's two attacks are tribute to the first Kamen Rider series. Maximum Hyper Typhoon is a reference to the Typhoon Belt, the Henshin Belt of Kamen Rider 1. Maximum Hyper Cyclone is a reference to the Cyclones, the bikes for Kamen Riders 1 and 2.
- In episode 25, Kagami finds the first "Masked Rider Project" record, which has a date of "4/3/1971" (April 3, 1971), which refers to when the orignal Kamen Rider series premeired in Japan on that date.
- The name "Neo-ZECT" may be a reference to Neo-Shocker, the villains of "New" Kamen Rider.
- Masato Uchiyama, who plays Shun Kageyama/TheBee/Punch Hopper, is the fourth actor to have played both an Ultraman and a Kamen Rider. Hassei Takano played both Kamen Rider Raia and Kamen Rider 2 as well as the rival Ultraman, Ultraman Agul, in Ultraman Gaia. Shin Ishikawa, who played Kamen Rider Shin in Shin Kamen Rider also plays the part of Ultraman Hikari in Ultraman Mebius. Jun Takatsuki plays both Kamen Rider Tiger and Ultraman Neos.
- Tomohisa Yuge can be considered as having played Tuxedo Kamen in Toei's 2003-2004 live action Sailor Moon. He was wearing the outfit but the character was a Tuxedo Kamen imposter. He joins several other actors who has taken the role of Kamen Rider and Tuxedo Mask since Tomohisa Yuge has played a Kamen Rider before. First Yuuta Mochizuki who plays Kamen Rider J as well as TyrannoRanger in Zyuranger acted in a Sailor Moon Musical as Tuxedo Kamen. Hironari Amano who plays Kamen Rider Garren in Kamen Rider Blade also became the Tuxedo Kamen in Sailor Moon's musical. Shibue Jyoji who played Kamen Rider Ibuki in Kamen Rider Hibiki was Tuxedo Kamen in the Live Action version of Sailor Moon.
- This is the first New Generation Rider series to feature Grasshopper-motif riders. Kick Hopper and Punch Hopper are also very possible references to the original Kamen Riders.
- The storyline pays homage to the dance movie The Red Shoes in that: there are two main male foil characters (Tendou and Kagami) that are involved with one female character (Hiyori), the Masked Rider Project is also referred by Riku Kagami as the "Masquerade Project," and both the Kabuto and Gattack also have a "Red Shoes" devices.
The 35th Masked Rider Anniversary File
Starting in Episode 23, the segment is held in a movie theatre and the segment is hosted by Souji Tendou (Kamen Rider Kabuto), Arata Kagami (Kamen Rider Gatack), Tekki Yamato (Kamen Rider Ketaros), Yuzuki Misaki, and Masato Mishima. Similiar to the 30 Sentai Encyclopedia segments featured in Gougou Sentai Boukenger, they discuss the history of the Kamen Rider franchise, sometimes in a comedic tone, but always with serious background music.
- Episode 23 (Rider Kicks): The group watches and Yamato narrates the variations of Rider Kicks during the course of the years. Yamato mentions about the Rider Double Kick of Kamen Riders 1 and 2, Kamen Rider V3's V3 Kick, Kamen Rider X's X Kick, and Kamen Rider Super-1's ten various kicks. In the end, Kagami stands up and does his own Rider Kick (he even shouts the attack name) and falling into his seat with Yuzuki looking. Tendou and Kagami ask Yamato, "Who are you?"
- Episode 24 (Criminal Organizations): The group watch and learn about the different criminal organizations the Kamen Riders had to fight. Villains include Shocker & Gel-Shocker in the first Kamen Rider, Destron from Kamen Rider V3, and King Dark (of the Government of Darkness) in Kamen Rider X. Footage of Black Satan, first enemy of Kamen Rider Stronger, is also shown. Tendou then supposes that it is the Kamen Rider's destiny to fight an organization. Mishima tells Tendou that ZECT will show no mercy to anyone who fights them. Yamato then says that he will definitely smash Neo-ZECT for rebelling against and splitting off from ZECT.
- Episode 25 (Rhinoceros Beetle-Themed Kamen Riders): The group watches Kamen Rider Stronger, and Kagami quickly thinks that Stronger himself is Kabuto, and looks at Tendou confused. Misaki corrects him, informing him that this is a different Rider, using the rhinoceros beetle as a design. Mishima then announces that it is Kamen Rider Stronger. The camera then zooms on Tendou's face as he says that while this Rider may be Stronger, he (referring to himself) is the strongest. Tendou pronounces "Stronger" and "Strongest" in English, (due to the fact that Hiro Mizushima, who protrays Tendou, is fluent in English). Yamato then also speaks of the Kabutech Riders (Caucasus (Caucasus beetle), Heracus (Hercules beetle), and Ketaros (centaurus beetle), the last of whom Yamato happens to be), which are also Rhinoceros Beetle Riders (as the Caucasus, Hercules, and centaurus beetles are rhinoceros beetle sub-species). Also, despite being a Rhinoceros Beetle Rider, Kamen Rider Blade (also a Hercules beetle) was omitted. At the end, Tendou stands up and miniature hexagons with Tendou's face appear, forming a compound eye pattern as Tendou says once again that he is "The man who walks the path to heaven to rule over all."
- Episode 26 (Riders Everywhere): The group watches New Kamen Rider and Yamato comments on Skyrider's Sailing Jump, then says that the Riders can go anywhere around the world. In addition, they are not restricted to the ground. Then, Misaki mentions the Riders can even now go into space. During this, they watch footage of Kamen Riders 1 through ZX training with each other in Kamen Rider 1's base on Arizona in the final episodes of Kamen Rider BLACK RX, followed by footage from God Speed Love. Please note, that even though Kamen Rider Super-1's suit is capable of space travel, it is not used that way in the TV series. Tendou then coins a variant his trademark quote ("Now, I will truly walk down the path to heaven and rule over all.").
- Episode 27 (Kamen Rider Ultimate Forms): Kamen Rider Stronger's upgrade is not mentioned (as it is not an "Ultimate Form", but rather a temporary power upgrade) and the short starts with Yamato commenting on BLACK RX and his modes RX Roborider and RX Biorider. It then moves on to Kamen Rider Kuuga Ultimate Form, Kamen Rider Agito Shining Form, Kamen Rider Ryuki Survive, Kamen Rider Faiz Blaster Form, Kamen Rider Blade King Form, and Kamen Rider Armed Hibiki. Suddenly, Yamato and Tendou are about to duel with the others looking on and showing on screen is Kabuto's Ultimate Form, Hyper Form.
