Granger who had approximately 5,000 men under his command. Commanding the Confederate forces was General John B. Hood, who had the Army of Tennessee under his command. The battle took place at Decatur, Alabama.

The confederate General John B. Hood and the Army of Tennessee began the Franklin-Nashville campaign in the fall of 1864. On October 26 1864, Gen. Hood and his army attempted to cross the Tennessee River near Decatur, Alabama. However, under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Robert S. Granger the union forces (which had only around 5,000 men) were able to prevent Hood’s army from crossing the river.
