Conflict of interest

edit

This article is full of promotional language. Unsurprisingly, it has been edited CJCollier who works for MySQL!

Can you give one example of promotional language here? Looks very fair to me. 212.76.37.180 13:59, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes for example all of the text quoted below is complete promotional jargon.

"MaxDB is an ANSI SQL-92 (entry level) compliant relational database management system (RDBMS) from SAP AG, which is delivered by MySQL AB as well. MaxDB fulfills the needs for enterprise usage: reliability, scalability, high concurrency and performance. Over the years it has proven able to run SAP R/3 and terabytes of data in 24x7 operation. MaxDB is targeted for large mySAP Business Suite environments and other applications that require maximum enterprise-level database functionality."

Although factual, the choice of words is the key factor that makes it promotional particularly "jargon" eg "fulfills the needs", which is open to challenge. The definition needs to be written in plain English eg "Over the years it has proven able to run....." could be written as "It can run......" and 24X7 operation presumably means continuously.

It's hard to find someone who knows much about MaxDB because it apparently wasn't used much outside of SAP even when MySQL was promoting and distributing it. I think an anonymous posting on Slashdot thread 1267023, comment 28318559 sums it up well. "The first problem was that there were practically no external contributions as the code base is very complex and at that time important parts of it were PASCAL. ... The second problem was missing commitment from MySQL. ... It's a pity for me not being able to look at the source code anymore but I doubt that there is a large number of people affected by this." SAP also has strong nondisclosure provisions in the license that applies to customers, partners and evaluators. Note that I'm probably tained as well, since I'm currently attending SAP/ABAP training (internal, at a company other than SAP). The training-instance I have access to runs on DB/2. If ever [citation needed] was justified, it's when some tool of a wikiprick quotes an AC post on slashdot.

is MaxDB GPL Source Code still available?

edit

Since MaxDB released for while with GPL, is that license still considered valid for that source code? Is such a source code still available? Are there any products derived from GPL'd MaxDB?
