The original version of this article said that the conversion of the node numbered happened in 1995. I changed that to 1992-5 because I am somewhat sure it happened before 1995. I stopped BBSing in 1995 and the new node numbering system was in use for at least a few years then. But I may not be remembering correctly either. --12.217.175.158 17:30, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

WWIVNet node renumbering - from area-code based to zone based.

edit

The conversion of node numbering did not happen in or before 1995. It happened after July 31, 1996, as that is the date when I shut down my WWIVNet linked BBS, Black Dragon Enterprises (#3080; #2380 before 1991 when the telco industry split the 213 area code creating 310). BDE also had an alter ego, The Snark's Abode (#13080) - the only WWIV system that could dynamically reload its main configuration file while running. When I left WWIVNet in 1996, I recall no talk of the zone structure of the form "xzzz" - so it must have occurred after.

Careful there Stussy... Only is a strong word -- you weren't the only person who could mod the source.  :-) /Blaxthos (WWIV #24197) 08:09, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes we all had the source but some of us didn't use WWIV or any known bbs package and tossed the packets right on to web pages. fun times. --68.150.40.18 (talk) 19:14, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
This is untrue, because I personally have archived messages from 1994 which are node numbered $FOO@$BAR - Stussy is simply wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.195.128.195 (talk) 02:57, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I figured out the date for the Node Number change in WWIVnet. It happened some time between 2/93 and 4/93. I did this based on old WWIVnet WWIVNews newsletters at http://www.textfiles.com/bbs/WWIVNEWS/. The change in e-mail addresses in the WWIVnet listed occurs between the 2/93 and 4/93 issues of WWIVNews. Fido's address changed from 1@5252 to 1@2050. David Reiss 10:35, 26 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, not in 1993. That event you refer to was an area code split (512 => 512 & 210), not the renumbering that was based on the group system mentioned on the main page. -D. Stussy 71.106.211.188 (talk) 07:57, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Problem is, we didn't document stuff. So most of this is going to be from memories. Had a lot of fun with WWIVNet. I was node 4651 until the 416/905 split. Don't remember my 905 node number anymore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.186.72.8 (talk) 01:11, 13 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
