NB: this article is incorrect, evacuees were also processed through Subic Bay Naval Station. The original article appears to be from http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/fiery_vigil.htm or http://www.patriotfiles.com/index.php?name=Sections&req=viewarticle&artid=668&page=1, not a primary source but http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/navy/batgru-72.htm
- Evacuee transport (ship, evacuees carried, reference)
Presence possible but doubtful: USS Fife (DD-991) USS Hewitt (DD-966) USS Oldendorf (DD-972)
Supported by the USNS Hassayampa.
USS Roanoke (AOR-7)
USS Passumpsic (AO-107) - present but did not participate
USS Niagara Falls (AFS-3)
Using the USS Long Beach (CGN-9) more-or-less as a template.
I am approaching improving this article by the following method:
Using the command histories as primary sources.
- Build sections conducive to bullet pointing, i.e. Commanders and Milestones.
- Create bullet points
- Select only those that are significant over the course of the likely lifetime of the ship
- Keep them brief - the details can be laid out in the narrative sections
- Find source material where command histories are not available
- Wikify
- Wiki-references
- Citations
- Create bullet points
- Write narrative sections
- Find additional sources (official and news)
- Find, upload and include interesting pictures
History
editOn 12 August 1988 BM3 Kerekgyarto died instantly when the slewing arm davit (SLAD) for the ships boat broke from its mount and fell on him. A subsequent investigation revealed a faulty weld as the cause. The SLAD was installed during the 1988 ships reduced availability (SRA) period to serve the rigid hulled inflatible boat (RHIB) which replaced the motor whale boat.
1989 saw the Kauffman make her maiden Mediterranean deployment with the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) [1], participating in ASW operations with the French Navy and Display Determination. The ports visited included Malaga, Spain, Villefranche, France, Catania, Sicily, Sevastopol, USSR, Istanbul, Turkey, Marseille, France, Palma, Spain, and Ibiza, Spain.
Early 1990 saw the Kauffman in an ships restricted availability (SRA) period where the #1A gas turbine generator and the Mk. 75 76mm gun mount were replaced. A Silver Cutlass Award was won for the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) program, and the North Carolina Azalea Festival at Wilmington, North Carolina was visited. Kauffman then participated in BALTOPS with port visits to Helsinki, Finland, Kiel, Germany, Gdynia, Poland, Aalborg, Denmark.
During preparations for a forthcoming deployment the Kauffman visited Nassau, Bahamas and shortly after returning command changed to Commander Chapman, USN. 26 April Kauffman deployed on MEF (Middle East Force) 2-91 which included visits to Port Mahon, Spain, Muscat, Oman, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Mina Sulman, Bahrain, Genoa, Italy, Alicante, Spain.
