The Pittsburgh Cannons are an American professional basketball team based in Pittsburgh. The Cannons play in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In sixty-two complete NBA seasons, the franchise has reached the playoffs 41 times, played in the Finals ten times and has unfortunately lost in all ten occasions. This includes a streak of 21 straight playoff appearances from 1979–80 through 1999–2000 and 35 out of 39 seasons in which the franchise has clinched a playoff berth, from 1970–2008. [1] The Cannons are 9th all-time in wins, 5th in win percentage, and have the 7th most playoff appearances in NBA history.[2] Since 2000, the Cannons have played home games at Heinz Center.

In 1961, owner Mark Zorberg founded the franchise as the Cleveland Cannons, which started play in the 1962–1963 NBA season. The franchise endured a record of 57–263 for the first 4 seasons with no playoff appearances before ultimately relocating to Pittsburgh as the Pittsburgh Cannons. The franchise reached its first ever NBA Finals in 1971, in which they lost in 7 games to the Milwaukee Bucks after coming back from a 3 to 1 series deficit. The Cannons had further success in the 1980s under the leadership of star players J.J. Hort, Curt Valentine and defensive player of the year winner James Ray as they advanced to the NBA Finals a further 5 times in the decade, with the best season in franchise history to-date being the 1984–1985 season to which they amassed a record of 68–14. In the finals however, they could not dethrone the Magic Johnson-led Lakers since they lost to them each time they played in the finals in the 1980s. During a brief period from 2007–2017, the franchise played under the name Pittsburgh Chariots. Encompassing a record of 284–520 with 3 playoff appearances in the 10 seasons the Pittsburgh Chariots have played in, the name was changed back to the Pittsburgh Cannons before the start of the 2017–2018 NBA season. The franchise have achived much better success since then, with the Cannons reaching the 2020 Finals, however losing to the Lakers for the 7th time in their franchise history and the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2020–2021 season.
