Honor cords

Honor cords is an item of academic dress consisting of twisted cords with tassels on either end given to members of honor societies or for various academic achievements. Usually, cords come in pairs with a knot in the middle to hold them together. Sometimes sashes, stoles, or medallions are given in place of cords. Worn with cap and gown and (sometimes) the hood, these cords supplement the official uniform of a high school or university graduate.
