Daily review

Day 1: 15 January

World Number One Roger Federer continued his dominance handily dispatching Bjorn Phau of Germany 7-5, 6-0, 6-4. American Mardy Fish provided the upset of the tournament in upsetting number 4 seed Ivan Ljubičić in 4 sets: 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4. Fellow American Andy Roddick played a lengthy first set against wild card Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lasting a 20-18 tiebreaker in Tsonga’s favour. Roddick won the remaining three sets to advance 6-7 (18), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-3. Another American, wild card Sam Querrey upset 27th seed José Acasuso in four sets. Top ten players #7 Tommy Robredo and #9 Mario Ančić advanced in their respective matches. Homeland favourite Wayne Arthurs, playing in his final Australian Open advanced past Stefan Koubek after losing the first 2 sets, 1-6, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-3. In addition, five Frenchmen advanced: 18 seed Richard Gasquet, Marc Gicquel, Nicolas Mahut, Gaël Monfils, and Florent Serra.

Day 2: 16 January

Day 2 was riddled with stories. The primary trouble facing all of the players was the heat resulting in implementation of the Extreme heat policy and subsequent delay of matches. The delay and long nature of the match led Belgian Olivier Rochus and Australian Chris Guccione play a five-setter ending at 3:40 local time. Serb Janko Tipsarević was forced to retire due to the heat against number 8 Argentine David Nalbandian despite winning the first two sets. Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu suffered a particularly grizzly injury in his match against Fernando Verdasco leading to his retirement despite leading 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-6 (3-1). Verdasco accompanied Mathieu to the hospital in a show of care for his opponent. In seeded play, #2 Rafael Nadal, #3 Nikolay Davydenko, #5 James Blake, and #15 Andy Murray (tennis player) won in straight sets. Scot Murray won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 and was visually upset in failing to blank his opponent Alberto Martin. Australian hopes #19 Lleyton Hewitt and Robert Smeets also advanced.

Day 3: 17 January

Day three saw Roger Federer continued his dominance, dispatching double’s specialist Jonas Björkman in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Wayne Arthurs continued his impressive run by recovering from a set down and defeating American qualifier Zack Fleishman 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. Number 6 Andy Roddick advanced in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-4 over Marc Gicquel to advance to the third round. Many matches were effected by rain, none more so than the match between Russian Marat Safin, seeded 26, and young Israeli qualifier Dudi Sela. Marat Safin wisely requested that play be suspended while noticeably out of the match with Sela up two sets to one, six games to five, and 30-30. After the delay, Safin returned to win the fourth set and then the final set 6-0 to advance. The lone notable upsets were number 11 and 2006 Australian Open Finalist Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis losing to Gaël Monfils 7-6 (5), 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 and 24 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero losing to Thai Danai Udomchoke 7-6 (0), 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. #7 Tommy Robredo, #14 Novak Đoković, #18 Richard Gasquet, #25 Mikhail Youzhny, and wild card American Sam Querrey only needed 3 sets to defeat their respective opponents. Also advancing were #9 Mario Ančić, #16 David Ferrer, #20 Radek Štěpánek, #22 Dominik Hrbatý, and unseeded Mardy Fish.

Day 4: 18 January

Day 4 saw Rafael Nadal, ranked number 2, defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and number 3 Nikolay Davydenko advance in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 over Gilles Müller. The lone upset of the day saw Juan Ignacio Chela defeat #17 Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. #19 Australian Lleyton Hewitt defeated Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Number 5 James Blake defeated fellow American Alex Kuznetsov 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. Seeded players #8 David Nalbandian, #10 Fernando González, #12 Tommy Haas, #13 Tomáš Berdych, #15 Andy Murray (tennis player), #21 Dmitry Tursunov, #28 Sébastien Grosjean, #31 Stanislas Wawrinka all passed their second round tests. Joining them in the third round were German Florian Mayer, Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, and American Robby Ginepri
