List of Heroes characters
This is a list of fictional characters in the television series Heroes. The article deals with the series' main, recurring and minor characters.
Main characters
The show features an ensemble cast of twelve main characters. The NBC Heroes Cast page lists ten characters among the cast, excluding the delayed arrival of one character and a change in status for another as of the eleventh episode.[1]
Other characters
Charlie Andrews
Charlene "Charlie" Andrews, played by Jayma Mays, is a waitress at the Burnt Toast Diner in Midland, Texas, where Hiro Nakamura and Ando stop to eat on their road trip to New York. After she reveals to Hiro that she has recently developed a near perfect ability to quickly memorize any information, Sylar murders her in the diner's storeroom, removing her brain in the same manner as Sylar's other victims.[15] Hiro tries to prevent her murder by going back in time one day to warn her, but he accidentally goes back six months, to April 24 (Charlie's birthday). He convinces Charlie that both he and she have special powers by stopping time to make one thousand origami cranes. After taking a job at the diner and dating Charlie, Hiro buys two tickets to take her to Japan. Charlie ponders her feelings and tells Hiro that while she doesn't usually let people get close to her due to a blood clot in her brain that is killing her, he makes her feel happy and she loves him. However, when Hiro and Charlie are about to kiss, he is inadvertently teleported back to Japan and is unable to return.[9]
Mohinder Suresh later mentions the death of Charlene Andrews in Midland, Texas while talking on the phone about the list of names he found on his father's computer in an attempt to stop the string of murders.
Lyle Bennet
Lyle Bennet, played by Randall Bentley, is Claire Bennet's younger brother. He dislikes his sister, and his mother implies that he is a hypochondriac.[16] Lyle finds out about his sister's healing powers by watching a videotape showing her quickly recovering from such otherwise deadly experiences as being hit by a car and falling nearly thirty feet. After confirming his realization by stapling Claire's hand and watching it heal, Lyle locks himself into an SUV with the tape. Only after Claire says that she would have to be taken away if her parents found out, does Lyle finally exit the vehicle and grudgingly hand her the tape.[17] After Claire tells her father that Lyle knew about her powers, Mr. Bennett has the Haitian remove Lyle's memories about her healing abilities.[13]
Sandra Bennet
Sandra Bennet is Claire Bennet's adoptive mother, played by Ashley Crow. She has a pet pomeranian, "Mister Muggles", with whom she has tried, with little success, to win a dog show. She has had equally little success in breeding Mister Muggles, claiming that the dog doesn't want to mate with any species with "poo" in its name. She does not seem to be aware of her husband's activities or her daughter's powers, and the Haitian has wiped her memories several times on her husband's orders.[13] However, after Claire met Hank and Lisa, Sandra told Claire that she and Mr. Bennet had tried unsuccessfully to find her biological parents when she was a baby because they thought she might have a rare chromosomal disorder.[16]
Charles Deveaux
Charles Deveaux, played by Richard Roundtree, is the wealthy father of Simone Deveaux and a former patient of Peter Petrelli. Simone believes that Peter is "like a son" to him and that Charles has improved under Peter's care. Charles converses with Peter in the young nurse's dream about having the power of flight. After Peter wakes up, Simone tells Peter that Charles has passed away. Simone also tells Peter that, before dying, Charles said that he had flown with Peter, who said, "everything was going to be all right", and that there were heroes who were going to save the world.[17]
Hana Gitelman
Hana "Samantha" Gitelman, introduced in a four-part arc of the Heroes graphic novels, is a third-generation Israeli soldier. Motivated by the deaths of her mother and grandmother due to a terrorist hijacking, Hana trains and joins the army. Kept out of battle by her superiors due to her desire for vengeance, Hana remains in Army Intelligence until Mr. Bennet approaches her. Bennet is instrumental in the manifestation of her superhuman powers and makes her a spy. However, after being captured by enemy forces, she realizes that he's been lying to her. After escaping, she adopts the alias "Samantha", lays low while working with Ted Sprague to learn more about Bennet in hopes of stopping him.
Note: Her surname is generally spelled as "Gitelman", but also mistakenly as "Gittelman" in Wireless part 2.
Audrey Hanson
Audrey Hanson is an FBI agent, played by Clea DuVall, pursuing Sylar. Three months after Sylar begins his murder spree, Audrey catches sight of him in Chicago, but he eludes her by escaping on a subway after giving his cap and trenchcoat to an elderly man, whom Audrey shoots, mistaking him for Sylar.[18]
While investigating the murder of a family in Los Angeles three months later, Audrey initially becomes suspicious of Officer Matt Parkman when he finds the only survivor, Molly Walker, in a hidden room and then reveals that he knows the name of her suspect, Sylar. However, when Parkman convinces Hanson that he learned of these things through his telepathy, she asks him to help the FBI find Sylar. Later, Sylar unsuccessfully attempts to seize the girl from FBI custody. During his escape, Audrey is almost forced to shoot herself because of the man's telekinetic abilities but is saved when Parkman intervenes.[19]
Audrey again requests the aid of Officer Parkman when she suspects that Sylar has killed again. She takes Parkman to the morgue, where they examine the body of a dead oncologist who was burned alive. Audrey is exposed to a dangerously high amount of radiation while investigating the house of Theodore Sprague, whom she believes to be Sylar. She and Parkman find Sprague in the hospital with his dying wife, but Parkman persuades him to surrender.[17] However, Sprague escapes after being taken into custody by Homeland Security, and she again enlists Parkman's aid in hunting him down.[15] Audrey has started to bond with Matt, to the extent of giving him advice on his relationship with his wife, though the episode "Fallout" also suggests that she is also becoming attracted to him.[13] Two weeks later in "Godsend", Audrey and Matt have the FBI raid Primatech Paper Company. However, they find nothing. Audrey's superior then threatens Audrey's position with the bureau. Disheartened, Audrey harshly tells Matt their partnership is over.
Sanjog Iyer
Sanjog Iyer, played by Javin Reid, is an Indian boy whom Chandra Suresh had been observing prior to leaving for New York. Chandra's notes described Iyer as having a genetic marker allowing the boy to enter people's dreams, where he acts as a "Spirit guide" of sorts. He appeared in the visions that Mohinder Suresh experienced after returning to India with his father's ashes. After Mohinder found Sanjog, he explained to Mohinder that he does not enter the dreams of others but that they instead come to him.
- Note: In "Seven Minutes to Midnight", the name on the file's label included a comma as a typo. The episode "Homecoming" confirms the boy's name is Sanjog Iyer.
Mr. Linderman
Mr. Linderman, an unseen character, is a reputed mobster who has ties to several of the main characters. In the series premiere, Linderman sends two thugs to Niki Sanders' home to collect on a loan she could not repay. When the thugs are killed, he sends a corrupt police officer to retrieve her in "One Giant Leap". In "Collision", one of Linderman's subordinates gives Niki the opportunity to repay her debt by assisting in the blackmail of Nathan Petrelli; Jessica, Niki's alternate personality, eventually complies. Nathan, however, realizes that Linderman needs him to win the congressional seat he was running for, and convinces Linderman's associate to "donate" $4 million to his campaign, rather than the originally agreed-upon $2 million, and suppress the tape.
In "Six Months Ago", Nathan and Peter discuss their father's connection to Linderman, and agree not to interfere with or expose that relationship, despite Nathan's political aspirations. After an incident where Nathan is driven off the road by a mysterious truck, which he believes to have been sent by Linderman, Nathan and Peter decide to instead report their father's relationship. When their father dies, shortly before they are scheduled to testify against their father and Linderman, the brothers decide to end their mission to expose Linderman.
Linderman purchases one of Isaac Mendez's paintings from Simone Deveaux. When Nathan inquires about it, Linderman sends it back to Simone's gallery. In "Godsend", Simone says that Linderman is one of her biggest clients, having purchased nearly every one of Issac's works. He is also revealed to be in possesion of a sword Hiro Nakamura desires.
Ando Masahashi
Ando Masahashi, played by James Kyson Lee, is a co-worker of Hiro Nakamura. At first skeptical of his friend's powers, he becomes convinced after watching Hiro stop time to save a schoolgirl from a traffic accident and agrees to accompany Hiro on his travels to "fulfill their destiny." Although Ando is an asset because he knows how to drive a car and speaks better English, the pair run into trouble in Las Vegas when he convinces Hiro to use his powers to cheat at gambling, and the two are later beaten up by their victims. After an argument, Ando leaves Hiro to visit Niki Sanders, whom he has watched strip online back in Japan. When he realizes that he and Niki didn't have a real relationship, he returns to accompany Hiro on his hero's journey. The two separate again in "Seven Minutes to Midnight", when Hiro fails to return from the past, where he has gone to save Charlie, a waitress killed at a diner they visited on the way to New York. Ando is still waiting for Hiro to return in "Homecoming" when Peter arrives. Ando admits to Peter that he cannot do much without Hiro. When Hiro returns to present-day Midland in "Fallout", Ando accompanies him to meet Isaac. Two weeks later, in "Godsend", Hiro and Ando have finally arrived in New York. They go to the Museum of Natural History and examine a katana once owned by Takezo Kensai. Hiro believes the sword will help him control his powers and steals the one on the display. However, this one turns out to be a replica made by Linderman, and they promptly return it. Back at Isaac's loft, they meet Simone Deveaux, an art dealer who sells a lot of Isaac's paints to Mister Linderman. Simone recommemds Hiro travel back to Las Vegas and meet Linderman.
Eden McCain
Eden McCain, played by Nora Zehetner, is an associate of Mr. Bennet. She possessed an effective power of persuasion. Eden's work for Mr. Bennet includes befriending Mohinder Suresh to spy on his investigation into his father's death and research into other people with superhuman powers. Later, Eden stops Sylar by causing him to go to sleep, allowing her and the Haitian to capture him. Soon, Eden attempts to use her power of persuasion to have Sylar kill himself. Instead, he telekinetically pulls her through the glass window to his cell and attempts to take her power. Unable to use her gun to kill him, she turns it on herself to prevent him from taking her powers. In "Godsend", Eden's real name was revealed to be Sarah Ellis.
Brody Mitchum
Brody Mitchum, played by Matt Lanter, is a classmate of Claire Bennet and quarterback on the football team at the fictional Union Wells High School. He first appears in "Don't Look Back". During a celebratory bonfire in "One Giant Leap", Brody and Claire wander off to the bleachers, where Brody attempts to rape Claire. He accidentally kills her during the struggle, but in "Collision", he is shaken to see her alive again. After Claire discovers that Brody has raped at least one other girl, she convinces him to let her drive them both home in his car but then rams the car headfirst into a brick wall. The on-line comic story for the episode reveals that Claire only wanted to frighten Brody into thinking twice before hurting anyone else, and she drags his unconscious body from the car when it catches fire and ultimately explodes.[20] When he wakes up and sees Claire unharmed, he realizes that she isn't a normal human being. After learning of the attempted rape of his daughter, an enraged Mr. Bennet has his associate, the Haitian, wipe out all of Brody’s memory. Despite this, Brody, severely injured, is later seen in a wheelchair attending Homecoming.
Janice Parkman
Janice Parkman, portrayed by Elizabeth Lackey, is the wife of telepathic police officer Matt Parkman. Their marriage has been troubled for some time, with both becoming increasingly distant. Janice blames their problems over his jealousy of her prospering career while his has been stalling. However, when Matt disappears for a day, she is truly worried about him. Matt then tries to fulfill her every need by reading her thoughts to improve their marriage. At first she thinks that he must have been cheating on her for him to be so attentive, but she is ultimately delighted by his efforts. However, Matt discovers that she had an affair with his ex-partner, leaving them both wondering whether their marriage is now over.
Angela Petrelli
Angela Petrelli, played by Cristine Rose, is the mother of Peter and Nathan Petrelli. In "Genesis" she is still not quite recovered from her husband's death six months ago, and has been doing odd things like shoplifting ever since. In "Don't Look Back" she confesses to Peter that he is her favorite son. She also reveals that Peter's father suffered from depression and had delusions of grandeur before he actually committed suicide, causing her to worry that Peter has inherited the condition. When the opportunity presents itself in "Nothing to Hide", Angela sets up a family brunch with a journalist as an invited guest. She insists that Nathan and his family pretend that brunches are a family tradition in order to use the journalist to create positive publicity about the family.
Heidi Petrelli
Heidi Petrelli, played by Rena Sofer, is Nathan Petrelli's wife and is involved with his strategies for his bid for congressional office. She first appears in "Nothing to Hide". She uses a wheelchair for mobility after being paralyzed in a car crash six months ago caused by Linderman's accomplices while Nathan was driving. Nathan, while trying to control the car, suddenly found himself flying for the first time. Tragically, he couldn't figure out how to get back down to his car and the car crashed into a highway barrier. During a brunch set up by her mother-in-law, an invited journalist implies that Nathan may have cheated on her with a blonde during his trip to Las Vegas to see Mister Linderman. She doubts Peter's story with an innocent explanation of the woman, but when Nathan confirms it in private, she believes him. Heidi says that she is determined to recover but only if Nathan is true to her.
Hal Sanders
Hal Sanders is the estranged father of Niki and Jessica Sanders. When the girls were younger, Hal was an abusive alcoholic. While both of them were beaten, Jessica took the brunt of Hal's abuse to protect Niki. When Jessica was ten or eleven years old, Hal strangled her to death. Niki somehow lost recollection of her childhood and only remembered that Hal eventually left her. Years later, Hal attempted to reconnect with his only remaining daughter, who was now a wife and mother. He offered much of the money he had made in the stock market to help Niki and her husband, D.L. Hawkins, raise their son, Micah Sanders. However, Hal later showed himself to be the same short-tempered man he has always been and was not accepted into the family's life. Later, Jessica, Niki's alternate personality, beat Hal up, gave him back the money he offered and told him never to come back.
Ted Sprague
Theodore "Ted" Sprague, played by Matthew John Armstrong, is a man who was originally thought by Audrey Hanson to be Sylar, with the power to emit radiation, enabling him to produce heat, radiation poisoning, and other natural side effects of radioactivity. He accidentally kills Dr. Fresco, the oncologist treating his wife's cancer, when he found out there was nothing more the doctor could do to save her. The doctor's corpse was charred black and heavily irradiated. Sprague's fingerprint was left imprinted on the bones, leading Matt Parkman and Audrey Hanson to discover his identity. When they investigate his home, they find it heavily burned and similarly irradiated. When Matt and Audrey come to arrest him in the hospital, Sprague threatens a nurse in order to stay with his wife and says that he might explode if he were to be shot. Matt convinces him to surrender by telepathically relaying his dying wife's forgiveness for causing her cancer.
When Sprague is interrogated at the FBI's Los Angeles office by Matt and Audrey, he becomes so agitated that he boils a glass of water he is holding in his hands. During the interrogation, he reveals that, like Matt, he blacked out for two days just after seeing the Haitian, and when he awoke, he had two mysterious marks on his neck. However, before Matt can learn more, agents of the Department of Homeland Security take custody of Sprague, who tells Matt to "find the Haitian." Sprague later escapes from custody, leaving the car that was transporting him in a burning wreck. He is later seen in an abandoned shack, creating large spheres of energy with his hands, in a possible attempt to hone his powers. During the pilot, and subsequently the second episode, a painting[21] can be seen relating to Sprague's abilities.
Over two weeks laters in "Godsend", Ted is seen a small cabin testing his powers. He can now create concentrated radioactive blasts from each hand which look vaguely like small fireworks.
During a special sneak peak, Ted is revealed working with Hana Gitelman. After coming to his shack in person, Hana proposes they work on a way to attack Bennet and his associates directly.
Chandra Suresh
Chandra Suresh is Mohinder's late father, played by Erick Avari (although a photograph of him and Mohinder seen in "Genesis" shows a different actor). Suresh was the author of Activating Evolution, a book which appears to explain the reason so many people with powers are suddenly appearing. He found a means of tracking and locating potential powered people. He was also connected with Sylar, whom he referred to as "Patient Zero". On a taped telephone conversation from shortly before Chandra's death, however, he said he wanted nothing to do with Sylar, and insisted the man stop calling him. Before his death, Chandra kept a male lizard named Mohinder.
According to a dream Mohinder had, Chandra was killed while sitting in the driver's seat of his cab by a man wearing a watch, which was stopped at 11:53, a watch which Sylar is often seen wearing. Eden McCain, Chandra's one-time neighbor, claimed Sylar was his murderer.
Shanti Suresh
Shanti Suresh was Chandra Suresh's daughter. She died at age five, before the series, and this severely affected her father, as the two were very close. In "Six Months Ago" Chandra Suresh said she had a genetic anomaly. Her death, along with several other factors, prompted him to begin his investigations into people with special powers. It is yet unknown what Shanti's "special" abilities were. Mohinder Suresh only recently learned of his sister's existence.
Sylar
Sylar, played by Zachary Quinto,[22] is a serial killer with multiple superpowers. He has often been seen wearing a baseball cap, short, unkempt hair and a watch stopped at seven minutes to midnight. His preferred method of killing is telekinetically cutting around a person's head and removing his or her brain.
Originally, Sylar is a second generation watchmaker named Gabriel Gray, who had been identified by Chandra Suresh as potentially having superpowers. However, he could demonstrate no other power to Suresh besides the ability to "know when things are broken, and how to fix them". Thus, he kills Brian Davis, a man with telekinesis, and then began to exhibit that power. He also assumes the surname "Sylar", taken from a brand of watch he was fixing.
Eventually, Sylar had a falling out with Suresh and killed him. Sylar then began roaming the country killing other superhumans to steal their powers. His murders led to FBI Agent Audrey Hanson and Los Angeles Police Officer Matt Parkman pursuing him, the former to an almost obsessive degree.
Eden and the Haitian are able to capture him at the end of the episode "Homecoming". During his imprisonment, Eden goes to Sylar's cell to persuade him to commit suicide, but he proves to be resistant to her power. He telekinetically drags her through the glass wall of his cell, angry that she had known what he was when she lived next door to Chandra Suresh. When she is unable to shoot him, she turns the gun on herself to prevent him from gaining her power. In the graphic novel, "Fathers & Daughters", it is revealed that Sylar was later subdued by Mr. Bennet and the Haitian.
His known victims include Charlie Andrews, Brian Davis, the parents of Molly Walker, and Jackie Wilcox.
Molly Walker
Molly Walker, played by Adair Tishler, is a little girl whose parents have been murdered by a serial killer believed to be Sylar. She first appears in "Don't Look Back", when she is found by police officer Matt Parkman after her parents' murder, who overhears her thinking "Please don't hurt me, Please don't hurt me," and follows her thoughts to a hidden panel under a staircase barricaded by furniture. Molly's dead mother is suspended five feet off the floor, pinned flat to a staircase banister by numerous knives. Molly's dead father is seated at a table, frozen solid, with his skull sliced open and his brain removed. In "One Giant Leap" Molly has been taken to FBI headquarters in Los Angeles, where a man believed to be Sylar breaks in and tries to drag her away. She is again saved by Matt with the help of FBI agent Audrey Hanson.
Jackie Wilcox
Jacqueline "Jackie" Wilcox, played by Danielle Savre, was a cheerleader and high school classmate of Claire Bennet. Although she claimed to be "BFF" (best friends forever) with Claire and once revealed plans to run for class president with "good deeds" as her platform, Jackie was an obnoxious rival and dramatic foil for Claire. Jackie repeatedly taunted Zach about his sexual orientation. She also was apparently jealous of Claire and Brody Mitchum, who described Jackie as a gossip. Jackie was eager to be the center of attention and took credit for a fire rescue Claire performed in "Genesis". In "Homecoming", Sylar mistook Jackie for Claire after having read of Jackie's faked heroism and killed her by telekinetically slicing open her skull; Jackie's last word, to Claire, was "run."
Claude
Claude, played by Christopher Eccleston, is a hero with the power of invisibility. He first appears in the episode "Godsend" during one of Peter's dreams, in which he is laughing prior to Peter exploding. Later in the episode, Peter is able to see Claude despite his invisibility, and is in fact invisible himself, having absorbed his power. Claude then accosts him, confused as to how he can be seen.
The Haitian
The Haitian,[23] played by Jimmy Jean-Louis,[24] was first seen in a bar by Officer Matt Parkman in "One Giant Leap". The Haitian has the ability to erase memories. He works closely with Mr. Bennet and has worked occasionally with Eden McCain, capturing people with superhuman abilities. On orders from Bennet, he has captured Parkman, McCain, Ted Sprague and Sylar. The Haitian has used his powers to erase the memories of some of his captives, and to varying degrees of success, Parkman's power of telepathy and McCain's attempts at mind control. He has also erased the memories of some of Bennet's own family. However, he did not erase the memories of Bennet's daughter, Claire, and instead asked her if she could keep a secret.
Hank and Lisa
Hank, played by Colby French, and Lisa, played by Karri Turner, claim to be a former couple who are Claire's biological father and mother in "Better Halves". Mr. Bennet tells Claire that he has arranged through an adoption agency for Hank and his former girlfriend, Lisa, to meet Claire and answer her questions. Hank and Lisa tell Claire that they were high school sweethearts who split up before her birth. Hank wanted to keep Claire, while Lisa wanted to give her up for adoption. Hank tells Claire that he has a family history of heart disease and cancer, while Lisa reveals that she has diabetes, but neither tell Claire anything that explains how she got her healing powers. However, after the meeting, Mr. Bennet thanks Hank and Lisa for their assistance in a conspiratorial manner, and he later tells Isaac Mendez a story not involving Hank or Lisa about how Claire became his adopted daughter. In the episode Godsend, it is revealed that Hank is actually a doctor working with Mr. Bennet to perform tests on Sylar.
Tina
"Texas" Tina, played by Deirdre Quinn, is the romance-novel-loving confidante of Niki Sanders who frequently takes care of Niki's son, Micah, and attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with Niki. When Niki confided in Tina about having blackouts and possibly an alternate personality, Tina told her that her troubles stem from psychological damage as a result of her dealings with the mob. In "Better Halves", Tina finally meets and flees from Niki's alternate personality, Jessica, after Micah is taken away by D.L. Hawkins.
Zach
Zach is played by Thomas Dekker. He is a high school classmate of Claire Bennet and one of the few people to know of her powers. Zach's MySpace profile describes him as an 18-year-old sophomore who is a Wiccan and unsure of his sexual orientation, a subject which forms the basis of ridicule by some of Claire's fellow cheerleaders. NBC has since stated that the character is heterosexual.[25] In the premiere episode, he filmed a videotape of Claire using her abilities. In "Homecoming", he reveals he has helped Claire win the Homecoming Queen election by campaigning for her amongst the unpopular crowd. He also gave her a book written by Chandra Suresh, which he says details information on her power. Claire is overwhelmed and later punches Jackie when she makes homophobic comments towards Zach. After Claire is grounded, Zach enters her bedroom using a ladder and convinces her to come to the Homecoming game.
After Claire told her father that Zach knew about her powers, Mr. Bennet had the Haitian make him forget about his relationship with Claire and her powers. When Claire approached him the next day, Zach didn't remember having even spoken to her since sixth grade. Nevertheless, Claire convinces Zach to videotape her again in "Godsend".
