Wikipedia:Image recreation requests
Are you an artist or a graphic designer? Do you have even a modicum of talent just waiting to be exploited, and are you interested in using your talents to improve Wikipedia? Well, we need you!
This is a place where those of us without such talents can list images (such as maps or diagrams) that are not available under a free license, in the hopes that someone will create images with the same information, and release them under a free license. Nothing major is required; most of these diagrams are relatively simple to recreate. Many are maps, and there are blank maps available in Wikipedia to work with.
Please check the image uploader's talk page (and its history), and make sure an attempt has been made to clarify the original license, before listing it here.
See also: Requests for new images, not recreations, should be listed at Wikipedia:Requested pictures instead. Requests for image cleanup can be found at Category:Images for cleanup.
If you can help, here's how:
- Pick an image from the list below that you are willing to recreate.
- Recreate it using your preferred imaging tool, be it Microsoft Paint or AutoCAD.
- Upload your new version, preferably to the Commons).
- Leave a note here to say that the new version is available, and sign your name.
- If you like, nominate the old image for deletion at WP:IFD.
- Accept our gratitude. That's all there is to it!
Individuals
- Omegatron will handle electrical schematics. Put them on his talk page.
- Mats Halldin is having a look at most of the images listed below. I hope to contribute during the next week. / Mats Halldin 07:51, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- MaxPower will rock the photoshop when he can.
- User:Quadell will list images as he finds them.
- As will Neutralitytalk
- User:LockeShocke can do some diagrams, cartoonishly, if need be. I'm not into CAD but I can whip up some general purpose stuff in Photoshop. I'll see what I can do. LockeShocke 21:34, Jan 31, 2005 (UTC)
- Kbh3rd is handy with some mapping, as well as The Gimp, when the time is available.
- dbenbenn can do simple diagrams in Metapost.
- flamurai can do general diagrams, graphics, and simple line drawings.
- bdesham can make flow charts and fairly simple line drawings.
- boffy_b's weapon of choice is The GIMP. I mainly fix photos, but consider myself reasonably competant at making diagrams and whatnot. Talk page

Board game layouts
- In general, chess positions can be replaced with a template, as in Fork (chess). dbenbenn | talk 23:56, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Go rules 0000.png, Image:Go rules 0002.png, and basically all the informative images in Rules of Go need to be recreated, or replaced with a template, like the chess images. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 19:31, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)
- Umm, why do they need to be recreated? They look fine to me. We aren't planning on hundreds of diagrams - Sensei's library does that. -- SGBailey 21:17, 2005 Feb 16 (UTC)
Maps
- Image:2004-03-20.PNG - a map of Kosovo, showing spots of battles and incidents.– Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 02:57, Jan 30, 2005 (UTC)
- Be sure to check out Talk:Unrest in Kosovo before touching this one. There have been some possible accuracy and NPOV problems raised. iMeowbot~Mw 16:07, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Image:D and r canal map.PNG - a map of some canals in New Jersey. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 21:23, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Cpw10ct.gif - a very difficult line-map of ancient Serbia. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 21:23, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
- See Image:Serbia - 10th Century - De Administrando Imperio.png. Probably good enough to put into the article. I may or may not yet add all the minor labels that are missing from the original. - Kbh3rd 04:57, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- This doesn't just need to be "recreated", it needs to be fixed because it's factually incorrect. See image talk page. --Joy [shallot] 12:24, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- No, it needs to be recreated because it's likely © 1973 by Alfred Toynbee and/or Oxford University Press. The recreation can effect "needed" changes much more gracefully than adding black blotches as well as curing illegibly scanned text. I'm adding an invitation on the original's talk page (which I hadn't noticed) asking for suggested changes for the new version. (I've already noticed two problems with the new one based soley on the original, precisely because of its legibility problems.) -- Kbh3rd 15:25, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Dietsland.jpg - a map of Dietsland, which is not a section of Disneyworld sponsored by Weightwatchers. It's apparently some right-wing Dutch thing. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 15:13, Feb 8, 2005 (UTC)
- Image:EthCleanCroatia.JPG - A before-and-after map of the ethnic distribution of Croatia. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 19:10, Feb 11, 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Extremaduramapa.png - a small map of Extremadura, an autonomous community of Spain. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 19:49, Feb 11, 2005 (UTC)

Chemical diagrams
Some sources for checking structures are NCBI PubChem Substance database and NIST Chemistry Webbook (will add more later). The supplied graphics leave too many implied atoms for my taste, but they offer SDF, MOL and other formats to redraw. iMeowbot~Mw 00:08, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Diagrams/schematics (hydraulic, electrical, etc.)
- Image:Conic sections.png - the conic sections. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 18:21, Feb 3, 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think this one needs to be recreated "verbatim." Judging from Conic_section a general explanatory image would do just fine. Maybe one as simple as [2]. But I think someone skilled in matlab could do up something pretty awesome. Does anyone know anyone like that? --MaxPower 20:32, 2005 Feb 7 (UTC)
- I used to know Matlab, 5 years ago. I'll give it a try this weekend if no one beats me to it. dbenbenn | talk 01:27, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I like the look of this kind better: http://www.andrews.edu/~calkins/math/webtexts/conicsl.jpg Certainly more intuitive than a 2D projection. - Omegatron 21:18, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)

- Image:Gravlens geometry.png - a diagram for Einstein ring, which could be useful for other articles as well. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 22:46, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Limitcycle.jpg - a Van der Pol phase portrait plot. Google tells me there are some matlab recipes out there to make a new one, if anyone has a copy of that handy. iMeowbot~Mw 04:00, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Other
- Image:Cyclic process.PNG - a rather simple algebraic diagram. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 21:23, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Chonnaq.jpg - a poor, hand-drawn Klingon weapon. Here's the information that came from Wikipedia:Image sleuthing:
- Used in Klingon
- Looks to be based on [3] from [4]. Evil Monkey∴Hello? 00:38, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
- You think it's hand-made? It's hard for me to tell. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 02:02, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)
- It's pretty crappy if you ask me. [5] states that "Each chonnaQ looks different due to the warrior's house and liking" and this [6] extensive treatise on the subject compares it to a halberd [7]. So maybe we could move it to recreation and have someone use a little artistry to create a new one using a halberd as a model? --MaxPower 14:35, 2005 Feb 7 (UTC)

- Is this even copyright elligible? --MaxPower 16:46, 2005 Feb 16 (UTC)
- Probably not, in the U.S. Other countries may vary on the threshold of what is too utilitarian to protect, though. One glaring example is typefaces, which are given copyright protection just about everywhere except the U.S., so it doesn't hurt to be sure. iMeowbot~Mw 17:08, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I think it's © eligible. The choice of colors, line thicknesses, spacings, etc. is marginally creative. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 22:01, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

- Image:Ferris.jpg - a drawing of a ferris wheel. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 15:13, Feb 14, 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Gears icon.png - an icon of two interlocked gears. The uploaded has not answered questions about the copyright status. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 14:17, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)
- Image:Icon-gears.png A possible replacement I whipped up. User:MaxPower/sandbox for a comparison. I feel like there is a gear icon used in one of the stub templates. I might be making that up though. --MaxPower 17:02, 2005 Feb 16 (UTC)

- Image:Element.png - um, a box with a capital A in it. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 02:15, Feb 11, 2005 (UTC)
- Jackson Structured Programming has a ton of images that would all need to be redone if this one needs to be redone. Does wikipedia have any template/hacks from doig flowcharts without images? --MaxPower 13:51, 2005 Feb 11 (UTC)
- You might get part of the way there with TeX markup, but none of the cool positioning and drawing things are supported, so then again, maybe not. Once upon a time (more out of necessity than desire) we used to draw these things as ASCII art, but that's cheesy looking. iMeowbot~Mw 00:27, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Please hold on these images. The history of User talk:Jonhallett shows that no one asked about the copyright status yet, and an email address is available too. iMeowbot~Mw 15:53, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
