The Iraqi Transitional Government will replace the Iraqi Interim Government of 2004, beginning with the election for the Iraqi National Assembly. Iraqi leaders hope to establish a complete government, and draft a national constitution by the end of 2005.

The election

Elections for Iraq's National Assembly occured on January 30, 2005, as required by the Law of Administration for the State of Iraq for the Transitional Period. This was the first of three potential elections that will be held in Iraq this year. Besides the National Assembly, the transitional government will also include the Presidency Council, the Council of Ministers, the Higher Juridical Council, and the Federal Supreme Court.
