Taliaferro County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 2,077.

Geography

The county has a total area of 506 km2 (195 mi2). 506 km2 (195 mi2) of it is land and 0 km2 (0 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 2,077 people, 870 households, and 559 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km2 (11/mi2). There are 1,085 housing units at an average density of 2 persons/km2 (6 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 38.18% White, 60.33% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 870 households out of which 26.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.30% are married couples living together, 20.00% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.70% are non-families. 33.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 18.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $23,750, and the median income for a family is $27,800. Males have a median income of $26,380 versus $21,534 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,498. 23.40% of the population and 22.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.30% are under the age of 18 and 23.40% are 65 or older.
