Lyon County is a county located in the U.S. State of Nevada. As of 2000, the population is 34,501.

Geography

The county has a total area of 5,222 km2 (2,016 mi2). 5,164 km2 (1,994 mi2) of it is land and 59 km2 (23 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.13% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 34,501 people, 13,007 households, and 9,443 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km2 (17/mi2). There are 14,279 housing units at an average density of 3 persons/km2 (7 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 88.62% White, 0.65% African American, 2.45% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 4.59% from other races, and 2.94% from two or more races. 10.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,007 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.40% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 27.40% are non-families. 21.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,699, and the median income for a family is $44,887. Males have a median income of $34,034 versus $25,914 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,543. 10.40% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.10% are under the age of 18 and 7.10% are 65 or older.
