Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Maile66 (talk | contribs) at 15:31, 5 June 2022 (Current DYK: either that or "peerage title"). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 02:56 on 6 January 2025) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

The DYK blurb for Clotworthy Upton states that he was unable to inherit his father’s baronetcy, when it should instead say barony or baronage. Baronetcy is used for the lesser position of baronet. RPH (talk) 14:11, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The source says "baronetcy", so we usually go with that to avoid original research. —Kusma (talk) 14:19, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done @Kusma: we have a contradiction here. "baronetcy" is not mentioned in the article. The source upon which this hook is based, is listed under "References" and points to the article wording, "Upton did not receive the family barony" I've changed it that. — Maile (talk) 14:58, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Maile66: it was changed in the article today. Searching for "Clotworthy" in the book source gives me "... John Upton inheriting the family baronetcy rather than Clotworthy". I don't know what is right, but I did check the source and it said "baronetcy", not "barony". —Kusma (talk) 15:09, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, this is confusing. Do you want to flip it back, or keep it at barony? I'm not British, so I have no knowledge in this area. I'll leave it up to you. — Maile (talk) 15:20, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How about "title"? —Kusma (talk) 15:25, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, either that or "peerage title". You can change it. It won't be edit warring. — Maile (talk) 15:31, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
