Harryboyles (talk · contribs) - I joined Wikipedia in January 2006 after coming across an article for CityRail. A spelling fix here, a full stop missing over there, a whole set of articles about what I really liked that were yearning for some attention, and I was hooked. There was just something about a collaborative effort to make an encyclopedia that appealed to me as an intellectual. Since then, I've learnt much about the world of the Wikipedia, and done much as well. As I look back over my time here, I feel proud at how much I've done, how much everyone's done. Then I look forward to what we still have to do and I realise just how much I want to help Wikipedia. I believe that these admin tools will only make me achieve more as a person and as a Wikipedian. - Harryboyles 1:45, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog and Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
A: Over my time here, I've discovered the WikiGnome in me. Typo fixing, disambiguation pages with links, userboxes on userpages per the Userbox migration solution and reviewing Articles for creation submissions have all been tasks that I've helped perform on a fairly regular basis. AFC in particular has given me a degree of experience with the content submission guidelines, I believe. I would like to help with the constant battle against the Criteria for Speedy Deletion backlog. I'd also like to dip my hand into the Images on Wikimedia Commons backlog. After I get settled, then I'd consider other backlogs.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A: I'm not a confessed article writer, so I don't have any pet articles in my care. I do get a funny feeling in my stomach when I convert a poorly written stub into a decent one [1] [2]. However my most satisfying contributions were when I added the infobox to 300 odd CityRail station articles and again when a new alternate version was developed. It was tiring, I must say, but the satisfaction of getting the job done at the end was tremendous.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: While I have been involved with a number of content disputes (especially one where an anonymous IP added misleading information to articles about Sydney railway stations and claiming he was right because he "lived there"), my most "prolific" incident was one where a student at my high school created, among others, an article about another student, personally attacking them and claiming that they were a terrorist. While I nominated it for speedy deletion and it was deleted "by the book", the fact that I was seen to be involved, meant that I had to deal with a lot of uncivil behaviour from students on the various sides of the incident. While it was tiring to have to explain the policies and procedures of Wikipedia to these students, I kept my cool, knowing that if they understood what I was explaining, that would be another person better educated. Behaving civilly has been somewhat a moral trait of mine, and I find that often when I get stressed, a cup of tea, a round of Call of Duty, or a bout of typo fixing can ease the pressure.
