Background

Faculty of Management Studies Delhi, usually abbreviated FMS Delhi, was founded in 1954 and is the first business school in India which started offering management training to professional managers in the form of a part time MBA Programme. It has been consistently ranked among top five business schools in Indian B School Surveys. The first set of professors was trained at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the institute was started at the Delhi School of Economics under the leadership of Prof. A. Dasgupta. The past decades have witnessed a significant growth in the nature and number of programmes offered at the FMS. It is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, business schools in India and has a strong alumni network. FMS has the unique privilege to be part of one of the premier universities of the world – the University of Delhi - with some of the finest departments in Economics, Law, Sociology, Commerce and Operations Research. The collaborative approach of pedagogy which involves inputs from various departments gives the benefit of a much wider view and deeper understanding and differentiates it from other Business Schools in India.

Courses & Exchange Programmes

The school has a reputation for producing excellent marketing and finance graduates . It is situated in the beautiful and vibrant North and South Campus of the University of Delhi. FMS has exchange programmes and collaborative arrangements with leading industrial and business houses, management institutions and professional associations in India and abroad. It is the founder member of the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA) and is working towards regional cooperation in management education and development in the spirit of SAARC. FMS is also one of the participating institutions in the India-EEC Exchange and Co-operation Programme for Management Professors. The various programmes offered by FMS are

  • MBA (Full Time) - 90 seats with 9 additional seats for foreign students
  • MBA (Management of Services - Full Time) - This programme started in 2004 has 40 seats with 4 additional seats for foreign students
  • MBA(Part Time) - 140 seats for candidates having a minimum of three year work experience
  • MBA(Health Care Administration - Part Time ) - 15 seats for practicing doctors
  • Doctoral Programmes which lead to a P.hD by University of Delhi

In addition to all these programmes, FMS also conducts Management Development Programmes.

Academic Chairs

In appreciation of its contributions, the Industrial Finance Corporation of India and Amway Corporation have created chair professorships in Industrial Management and Entrepreneurial Development respectively. The Shanti Prasad Jain Advanced Management Research Center, the research and development wing of FMS, has been setup at the University of Delhi with assistance from Bennett Coleman & Company Limited. In 2005, Union Human Resource Development Ministry , Govt. Of India has proposed a new chair in the name of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to promote management of innovation.

Admission Information

The school has historically been the most selective business school in the country and one of the most difficult B-schools to enter in India. It has maintained the highest ratio of "applicants to available seats" of any business school in India for the last decade. It has also had the lowest acceptance rates (typically <.03%) of any major business school in the world. The annual tuition fee of the 2 year flagship MBA (FT) Programme & MBA (MS) is Rs. 11,000(USD 250). MBA(FT) Programme has 90 seats (with 9 additional seats reserved for foreign candidates) and MBA (MS) Programme has 40 seats (with 4 additional seats reserved for foreign candidates). The admission is through the FMS Entrance test conducted in January every year. The notification for various programmes offered by FMS is advertised through national newspapers in September-October every year.

Management Science Association

FMS is well-known for its student body, the Management Science Association (MSA) and each student in FMS is a member of the Management Science Association. MSA runs various student interest groups and ensures that students have a participatory role in FMS pedagogy. FMS students are also well-known for their extracurricular achievements in the Indian B School arena.

Placements

With its global alumni network and academic standing among the industry for the last 50 plus years, the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, has always been known for its stupendous placement record over the years. The average salary for Class of 2003 was INR 6.88 Lakhs, for Class of 2004 was INR 7.04 Lakhs, Class of 2005 was INR 8.1 Lakhs, Class of 2006 was INR 8.9 Lakhs and Class of 2007 was INR 12.04 Lakhs. MBA (Management of Services) Two Year Full Time Programme saw their Pioneer batch getting placed with an overwhelming response from the Service Industry which recorded an average salary of Rs. 7.5 Lakhs/annum, a feat unmatched across B-schools in their inception year.

Some of the leading recruiters over tha past two years have been Macquarie Bank (Australia), Olam International, Lucent Technologies (APAC), Accenture Business Consulting, SAP, Deloitte Consulting, Ernst & Young, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Bank of America, Citibank, Standard Chartered Bank, Hindustan Lever Limited, Proctor & Gamble, Nestle, Cadburys and Tata Strategic Management Group.
