Hawaii road signs

Hey I was wondering if you had the time to create some more Hawaii road sign images. I'm in the process of creating some new articles on the number roads in Hawaii pretaining to those on the island of Kauai. I've already seen your work over at Wikipedia Commons. Ohio Turnpike et al shields question

NY 9M

Hi. I noticed you removed 9M from the NY Routes completion list. I think 9M did exist but the current sources I have don't list it though. It could be the designation was short lived and/or a minor road. I know the suffixed 9's (as originally established) just go from south to north so it must be a road connecting to US 9 between Lake George and Elizabethtown. (9N used to be Keeseville-Elizabethtown only before 1940). I should be able to get more information from the old map collection at the library tomorrow.

Related to this, 17L is another one that didn't seem to exist. 17A to 17J were created in the 1930 renumbering. 17K and 17M were added later. The M might have stood for Middletown, which is why L might have been skipped but I'm not sure. --Polaron | Talk 22:47, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I fixed New York State Route 28. This route is very long so my description is long as well. Check the junction list, where NY 28 meets I-88 i think there's a mistake because the person who created the junction list forgot to include NY 7 and it saids the NY 28 has concurrency with I-88. -- JohnnyAlbert 21:02, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

NY 28 does have concurrency with I-88 between exits 15 and 17. But yes, it does meet NY 7 (another concurrency), which isn't there, and should be (NY 7 does list this). Fwgoebel 03:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Wikiproject: New York Ratings

Hey TMF, I saw that you had enabled project ratings for the WP:NY - Thank you! I'm trying to go through the pages that I'm familiar with and assign ratings, though I'm having a little bit of difficulty in assigning importance values to a number of pages - mainly in reference to the guide that's provided. I.e., should all counties be "mid" importance, or some higher than others? Somehow it'll always be biased towards what the rater is thinking or coming from, regardless of how objective they try to be. Its challenging, but enjoyable. Though I just wish that the project was a bit more active - I would like to get a conversation going regarding this, but it doesn't seem like anyone checks the project's dicussion pages.

Anywho, how good is that Benson deal looking now? (yeah, I'm a Mets fan too).

I thought the exact same thing regarding the importance when I added the code; that's why I left the example table at the bottom blank for now. I saw some of your suggestions on the Assessment talk page and I agree with them. I'll add a few myself as I think of them.

Ah yes, Kris Benson...yes, that deal looks real good right now, especially if Maine continues improving from where he left off last season. Kinda sucks though that the Orioles scooped up Trachsel, but you win some, you lose some.

The New Jersey State and County Route Newsletter Issue 2 – February 2007

Issue #2 The second issue of the WP:NJSCR newsletter celebrates the promotion of Interstate 295 (Delaware-New Jersey) to good article status, as well as changes to the project on the county routes side.

Project News Interstate 295 (Delaware-New Jersey) was upgraded to good article status. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the good article review, and the discussions on WT:IH and elsewhere. Northenglish and EaglesFanInTampa have undertaken a project to put infoboxes on all NJSCR articles. In addition, the County routes in New Jersey article has been split into lists by county, and the infobox format for county routes has changed slightly. For all non-500-series county routes, the state is NJ County_name, and the type is blank. Infoboxes are set up for the following counties: Sussex, Ocean, Mercer, Cumberland, Bergen, Middlesex, Atlantic, and Monmouth. The following counties have a full set of shield SVGs: Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Sussex If you need help -- such as an infobox for another county, or more shield images -- don't hesitate to let Northenglish know. If you create an infobox that doesn't work properly (lots of redlinks), enclose it in an HTML comment (<!-- -->), and we'll get it working ASAP. Member of the Month The member of the month is EaglesFanInTampa, for his tireless work adding infoboxes to the 500-series county routes.

Which parts need to be redone? What i'm trying to say is, this exit list for I-78 (PA) is exactly like the one for I-295 (DE-NJ) and I-295 won the good article thing so why redo the exit list. Your quick question

It has to do with second reference, a concept the MoS doesn't seem to go into much unlike most style manuals, nor does that discussion you linked to. Perhaps it should. Here would be my reasoning for my way of doing it.

I don't think it's necessary to say the full "New York State Route XXX" or whatever every single time you mention a route in an article, anymore than you use your full name every time you say or write it. You're going to lose non-road readers PDQ that way — it'll make their eyes glaze over. When the article title uses that, and the lede does, with that short form right afterwards, then you establish to the reader that it's other state highways in the same (or other states') system you're referring to. "Route" alone, as the AP Stylebook recommends for newswriters unless more info is required to keep the context clear, is too ambiguous for us when you're talking (or could conceivably be) about U.S., state and county routes in the same article. "State Route" isn't much better (and brings up those naming move wars we had ... if we followed that, we'd have many different short forms in each state).

Consider that no one has a problem with "U.S." alone, implying "Route", as in "The shopping mall is at 355 U.S. 1 in Podunk". People thus understand that concept when it's applied to the states (especially since the two-letter postal abbreviations are in wide use on the Internet) and then retroactively take the periods out of "U.S." for use with highway designations. And to me the postal

Consider also that our own DOT here in NY used to sign exits that way before it switched over to shields ... back in the 1980s, when I went to Syracuse to start college. I can remember the Hancock exit on Route 17 being "NY 97 NY 268 PA 191", for one thing.

Granted, I've noticed I spell out "Interstate" on first reference and drop to the more jargony "I-" on second, so I can't be accused of being entirely consistent on the issue (But in that case, I'd say that references to interstates are less common in articles than other state routes, and that's also following AP style).

Thanks for the praise on the article! It was another one of those situations where I just thought I'd do a few things and move on to another thing (a pending project peer review on a film article that's probably already FA quality but I insist on taking it through the process) but it just snowballed (Ditto with U.S. Route 6 in New York. I think, if you're not planning to do it, I'll try to get a U.S. Route 209 in New York done soon (it would be very easy to write and I'm familiar with the entire length. I should also address US 9W and NY 32, which I can do nice long routes for).

If you want to get a GA out of it, I think we'll need some solid refs to back up the history and some of the claims in the article we both know are true ("longest north-south highway in NY", "only three-route U.S concurrency in the state"). I also think we could do better with the history (if we want FA quality, we need a lot of stuff from local historians going back to whatever Indian trails existed along the route and things like that. For a lot of routes besides U.S. 9, I'll add).

I'm also going to put up a list of photos it would be nice to have. How can Wikipedia not have a photo of the Dunn Memorial Bridge anywhere? (I haven't found a free one yet). I'll be going up to Albany at some point, perhaps more than once, in the next month. I'll try then. I also think one of the final cul-de-sac would be essential. We could also have some along-road scenery in Columbia County come warmer weather, with vibrant greens and blues, somewhere in the deep Adirondacks where you see just road and forest as far as the eye can see, and maybe some mountains and lakes too. Also, the Lake Champlain shore or some view of the lake from the road (dirty little secret: I've never actually been up there myself, I just used the map\satellite hybrid at Google to give me some idea of what the off-road terrain was like. But I will someday, I'm sure).

Speaking of history and photos, I've come across a nice collection in our library of work by William Crabtree, one of the founders of the Montgomery Worsted Mills. In the 1890s, apparently, he was into this new thing called photography so he took lots of pictures of our area, all sepia-tone and public domain now. Wouldn't it be cool to have, in the NY 17K article, one of these pictures showing the dirt road leading past the Patchett House that's now recognizably 17K in eastern Montgomery? Exit List Guide

Hey, I noticed JohnnyAlbert was having some problems with the New Jersey exit lists. If you agree with the tag, could you explain to me what exactly is not compliant? In creating them, I was following the ELG as best I could. -- NORTH ^talk 23:21, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

I looked at Interstate 78 in New Jersey and the only things that stood out were a few formatting issues. I've made the appropriate fixes. --TMF ^{Let's Go Mets - Stats} 00:25, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't care one way or the other whether the concurrency termini go in the notes column, or column spanning below it. However, it should definitely not span the exit number and milepost columns, since the concurrency beings/ends at that interchange at that milepost, not at an arbitrary point between two exits.

Also, I think it would make a lot of sense to boldface the exit numbers. The exit numbers are the most important things in the exit list, and this wouldn't be necessary if the exit numbers were in the first column. But since they're in the middle of the table, I felt some sort of formatting was necessary to bring attention to them.

I think the purpose of the ELG was to set a standard for creating new exit lists, so that we wouldn't have cases where some lists have the exit number first, some have separate road and destination columns, etc. I don't think the purpose is to force the lists to conform to arbitrary formatting decisions that aren't spelled out in the text of the guide, haven't been discussed, and up until recently, were far from consistent on the examples on the ELG.

I'm certainly not going to revert any of the changes you made to I-295 or I-78; I'm just trying to give some food for thought. -- NORTH ^talk 00:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I prefer that where it's important to note that a concurrency exists to span the columns with the concurrency join/end note. The only time it's really important to note that is when exit numbers change. Otherwise it should go in the notes column. A good example is Interstate 40 in North Carolina. Whether or not it spans ALL the columns...I think it looks cleaner when it does. I agree with the boldface of exit numbers. My apologies, I found it squeezed into special-case scenarios. But then, doesn't that contradict the standards on WP:NYSH? I realize that the intersection lists for New York State Routes aren't exactly the same as freeway exit lists, but I think it would be good to reconcile the differences between the two sets of standards, and come up with something that could apply to both types of lists.

Here's the source of my confusion. I wrote the standards on WP:NJSCR based partially on the Garden State Parkway exit list, partially on the WP:NYSH standards. Then you posted on WT:NJSCR noting that the NJ standards were similar to the ELG, so I reordered the columns and added in the county, thinking that was the end of it, and up until now, it was.

I'm about to post on WT:USRD/ELG. I'd like that discussion to result in some sort of consensus that applies not only to Interstate exit lists, but to the intersection list on (for ex.) County Route 3 as well. -- NORTH ^talk 23:13, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Rockland County Routes

Hey TwinsMetsFan, I don't really know a whole lot of computer programming skills. I actually just copied the County Route 80 template that was already on the site, so I went with that. Thats about the extent of what I know, haha, but if you want to make one route site as an example, I can copy and create the rest of the routes. It may take me awhile to do, but I can offer you that. Also, I used the svg shields that were already on the site like CR80, etc. The rest I've made myself as jpeg's, i thought they looked pretty good in the info box. I did use a converter though to svg on the internet for the 100px shields on top of the info box, cause the jpegs wouldnt show. So if you can create the rest of the Rockland County shields in svg that would be awesome. There's about 60 of them so take your time. Airtuna08 22:56, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

CR Shields Request

You might want to be on the lookout for this one. User:Burntsauce hasn't done anything terrible or wrong, but this user (for whatever reason) identified my edits to Pennsylvania Route 39 as vandalism, and reverted my changes. However, the next edit was User:Burntsauce reverting it back the way it was before "User:Burntsauce" reverted my edits. This user also did the same thing on Interstate 283 after I changed the infobox to infobox interstate/intrastate. Just wanted to let you know! --myselfalso 23:34, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Stub image sizes

There's not a new standard, but then again, there wasn't exactly an old standard, either, at least in any formal sense. But the majority it seem to no more than 40px wide and 30 high, so I'm going with that whenever I happen to be editing a template that uses a larger size for some other reason anyway (as was the case here), or if I come across anything honkingly large. Just wanted you to know he's trying the same thing with Tops. He doesn't seem interested in discussing things, just reverting others' reverts to his edits.

He has IMO lost a good-faith presumption. I will report him and request the page be protected if he forces a 3RR violation. I also note another user has tried and failed to resolve this with him two weeks ago, and given that I'm trying to make an attempt that I doubt will be successful with him, you know what that means. The New Jersey State and County Route Newsletter Issue 3 – March 2007

Issue #3 The third issue of the WP:NJSCR newsletter celebrates the completion of infoboxes for all current state routes. Congratulations team!

Project News All current state routes now have an infobox. Route 183 was selected to represent the project in the header as the last article to receive one. Now that we have that done, what's left? Plenty! A to-do list has been posted on the project page, with a more detailed version at WT:NJSCR#To-do list. The simple version: Ensure that all freeway exit lists are up to exit list guide standards. Make sure all infoboxes have the new maint= parameter. Make sure the straight line diagram is properly referenced in the infobox. Add a major intersections table to each article. Member of the Month The member of the month is Alansohn, who had the fantastic idea for a "final run-through" and the to-do list.

Question on Interstate 196

I noticed you put a clean up on the exit list for that highway. Granted I did some of the work on it but I thought it was up to standards. If I missed something I would like to know but I do not see any issues with the current setup. If you can give me some further info on it, I can address it. One thing to remember is that Mile Number is not needed in the State of Michigan for the interstates since the exit numbers are the mile numbers. --Mihsfbstadium 09:09, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Not sure why I missed your initial comment... usually I'm pretty good at responding. In any case, here are all the "violations" that I see with I-196 (not just the exit list) as of this revision.

• Not sure why the Route description section exists as of right now, since it has no contents. Additionally, it should be "Route description" per WP:IH and WP:MOS.
• The length table is unnecessary, as it is an intrastate Interstate. Instead, include the length and its ref in the lead.
• The major cities table is sub-standard; use the one provided on WP:IH instead. Additionally, "Major cities" does not need its own section - it is intended to be a floating box in the route description, which poses a problem on articles with no description.
• If the exit list is complete, which I assume it is, the "Junctions" section is unnecessary.
• The exit list:
  • Per archived discussions on WT:USRD/ELG and per actual practice, the exit column header should be "[[Exit number|#]]<br>Mile", clarifying to sequential exit-staters (like myself) that the exit is the milepost.
  • Counties/locations should always be wikilinked, whether this causes redlinks or not.
  • Exit 69 and the future exit below should have their "future" exit numbers placed in the notes column, not the exit column (which should reflect the exit's current number). In the case of future exit 69B, this would result in a blank cell.
  • All of the Michigan highways and some of the Business spurs are missing shields. Additionally, the business spurs are wikilinked to the parent Interstate when they should be linked to an article on the spur itself.
  • If a roadway has an alternate name (such as M-40 at exit 49), it should be displayed in parentheses, not with a slash (ex. "M-40 (Lincoln Road)" instead of "M-40/Lincoln Rd") per the ELG.
  • Template:Scaps is no longer supported by the ELG and should be removed. Per discussion on the ELG's talk page, capitalized first letters can remain, however.
  • The notes column has a number of grammatical violations, most prominently non-proper nouns being capitalized in a sentence.
• See Also: another WP:MOS violation ("See also").

I'd use it if it existed. Keep in mind that Image:Kansas Turnpike.svg already exists, but the text on your version is far superior to that of the existing SVG. I noticed you fixed the <small> tags on the NJSCR newsletter. I just had to do the same to Issues 3 and 4 of the USRD one. Do you know what's going on? Did the way they render actually change, or did I just never notice it before? -- NORTH ^talk 23:55, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

The rendering definitely changed, possibly from a software change. From what I can glean from a post on the Village Pump, it looks like the site is no longer automatically closing open HTML tags. I didn't notice it myself until today, when everything below the Wikipedia Signpost (which is where the faulty code originated from) was tiny. Image problem

Hi, sorry to bother you again so soon, but your edits replacing images don't seem to be working, e.g. [2], seems to be replacing a working image with a redlink, a nonexistant image. Am I missing something here too? --W.marsh 00:25, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Nice work updating that - I'm not a roads or map geek. If you looked at the history, it was originally quite charmingly non-WP. But there will likely be a problem with that non-free Mapquest link. Tennessee State Route 211

I noticed where the infobox had been added to this page. I appreciate that and have added more information to it. I'm wondering though, Tennessee State Route 79 carries both a secondary and primary designation. I would like to use a similar infobox but can't make it display both the Primary and Secondary shields for this particular route. De-stubbing of NYS Highway Articles

I've noticed there's been some de-stubbing by non-members of the Project (with a project member re-instating this designation); I saw that you did it for NY 90, and I've re-done it for one or two others. I just wonder what the source of all of this is (Project stub sort perhaps)? Still, I did see that someone did de-stub NY 30A and with that, I'm wondering if that article has made its way up to Start status (so for that one, I didn't change the designation). I'm not as able to be as active as I was, but I check the watchlist at least once a day just the same.
