Introduction

Designed by Stanley Hiller, Jr. in February 1947 only one Hiller X-18 was ever produced. The first test flight wasn't until November 24, 1959, ultimately recording 20 flights out of Edwards AFB. It was the first plane to utilize tiltwing technology for vertical take-off and landing but had insufficient engine power to hover. In addition, the entire wing would rotate which made the X-18 susceptibe to wind gusts, with the wing acting as a sail. Problems with the propeller pitch control eventually grounded the program in July 1961. The plane was cut up for scrap.
