St. George's School (also informally known as Saints), located in the Dunbar district of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is a private, non-faith boys' boarding and day University-preparatory school. Saints is considered to be one of the top high schools in Canada and, indeed, North America. The admissions process is largely academic based, with rigorous standards.
History
St. George's was founded in 1930 by Captain J. F. Danby Hunter. The original campus consisted of a small country house. Over the years, the school has been expanded to two campuses; the Senior School being built on land leased from UBC in 1965 and the Junior School being bought in 1979 from the Convent of the Sacred Heart.
The school continues to expand to this day; the Senior School is currently under development.
School Captain and Vice Captain
Current to 2007, Ronan Sabo-Walsh serves as Captain and Vincent Locsin as Vice Captain. Ronan is hailed as a world class rower/coxswain and is a talented pianist. Vinny is heavily involved in student-run humanitarian projects in the city, having recently met with the Dalai Lama and other charity leaders. At the Junior School (Grades 1-7), the head boy is Saahil Siddoo. The assistant head boy is Regiald Wirahardja. The head boy and assistant head boy are named on "Prize Day" at the Junior School, on the last day of school in June.
Academic Performance
The school is ranked highly by the Fraser Institute, receiving scores of 10 since 1999, and is tied with Crofton House School, York House School, Little Flower Academy, and West Point Grey Academy as of the 2006 report. The school has a near 100 percent graduation rate and its graduates go onto higher education at reputable universities all over North America, Asia, and Europe.
Curricular
Many academic subjects, some of which are enriched, are provided at the school. Students follow a prescribed courseload until grade eight, during and after which they are offered elective blocks. Numerous specialized courses are offered at Saints; courses that are simply not availaible at most other high schools.
In addition, there is a mandatory outdoor education program for students grades one through ten, as a character and team building exercise. Participation in the program in grade eleven and twelve is optional.
Extracurricular
Due to Vancoiver's mild climate, Saints is able to provide a year-round athletic program. It has competitive teams in many sports, some of which include rugby, basketball, skiing, rowing, and lawn bowling. The sports teams have performed well over the years as evidenced by the number of provincial sports titles that have been won.
St. George's mandates that its students have a recreational or competitive games choice starting from grade 8.
In addition, the school participates, with great success, in other extracurricular activities including robotics, Model United Nations, debating, and school reach.
Vancouver College, Upper Canada College, Appleby College, UVic Norsemen, Shawnigan Lake School are all big rivals to St. George's Dragons.
Notes
- The junior school campus is a heritage site.
- St. George's "sister" school is Crofton House School; it also has well established ties to York House School and Little Flower Academy. It has a "friendly" relationship with Vancouver College, though some students will say otherwise.
- Remy Eden, St. George's Grad of '08, recently won the fastest skater award in the Brentwood: Ross Cup Tournament/Hockey Provincials and is the fastest high school skater on Vancouver Island and quite possibly in British Columbia.
