York Region Transit (YRT) was created by the regional government of York Region in 2001 to combine the following public transit operators:

  • Vaughan Transit - Can-Ar Coach (Tokmakjian Group)
  • Markham Transit - operated by Miller Transit
  • Richmond Hill Transit - operated by Pacific Western and later Miller Transit
  • Newmarket Transit - Laidlaw Transportation

Much of the system is contracted out to private operators, but the system itself is managed by the region.

YRT regional transit plan, which would include a bus rapid transit (BRT) along the Yonge Street corridor and a Highway 7 BRT platform, as part of the "Quick Start" program to ease congestion on the region's roads. Viva York will be launched in September 2005 to offer a new mode of rapid transit. A number of routes connect to Toronto Transit Commission subway and surface routes, and many YRT bus routes end at both Finch and Don Mills subway stations. A new terminal has been added at the new Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre in Woodbridge. The bus rapid transit offers one fare for the two systems operating separately under the YRT.
