Broken English

Broken English was UK band formed in 1987 by Steve Elson, (singer and Guitarist), who at the time performed in a Rolling Stones tribute band. He wrote a song called Comin on strong, which had a Stones sound and feel to it. A friend heard the song and thought it was too good to be a one off novelity record and encouraged Steve to put together a band and record more material. The bands Debut Single caused a bit of a stir at the time as it had a Stones sound and feel about it, however the ruse was blown when the band made a Video featuring themselves performing dressed as Ghostbusters struting and playing their guitars. The First single did reasonably well sticking around in the charts for a good few weeks, however the two follow up singles didn't fair so well.

To carry on the joke and Rollling Stones references made several nods to them these included.

  • The name of the band referenced an Album by Marianne Faithfull.
  • The bands record label was the same as the Stones had once used.

Trivia

  • They recorded an Album which was never released, until 2007 nearly 20 years later.
  • One of the opening acts on the TV programme The Roxy.
  • Commin on strong was originally released as a White label to add to the mystery of who the band really were.
