Thomas was not a Biblical given name, but originated from the Aramaic designation תום or Tôm. The meaning of the name is "twin", and in the New Testament the designation was applied to Thomas the Apostle. The name "Thomas" was not very popular until the 12th century, after the martyrdom of Thomas Becket.

The female versions of this name are Thomasina and Tamsin.
