Wikipedia:Requested moves
Requested moves is used to request, and vote on, article moves that are not straight-forward or that require the assistance of Wikipedia administrators. For example, the proposed move may be controversial, or technical expertise may be needed to merge edit histories. The move should usually be discussed on the talk pages of any relevant articles first, particularly where a page move may be controversial.
Page moves requested on this page may be actioned if is a rough consensus supporting the moving of an article after five (5) days under discussion on the talk page of the article to be moved, or earlier at the discretion of an administrator.
If you want to merge two articles please make a request at Wikipedia:Duplicate articles instead of here.
Instructions
What to do on the talk page
- Add a note to the talk page of the article you wish to move (not the article itself) using the {{move}} template. This template should be inserted at the top of the page using the following text:
- {{move|new name}}
- replacing the words "new name" with the name of the destination page to where you wish to move the article. This produces the following text on the page where you inserted it:
This template must be substituted. Replace {{Requested move ...}} with {{subst:Requested move ...}}.
To make it easy for the administrator to see if there is a consensus for a move, if a section discussing the move does not already exist on the talk page of the article to be moved, then please add a section. See the section below in Additional notes for an example.
What to do on this Requested moves page
To aid the administrators, add a line with the days date on it directly under the heading of the Notices subsection, if it has not already been added for this day.
- ===[[date]] [[year]]===
Requests added to "Requested move" a page should have the following format:
For a single page move to a new name add a line at the top of the section under the date line:
* [[Talk:page to be moved]] – [[page to be moved]] → [[new name]] – {reason for move} — ~~~~
For more complicated requests see the section lower down this page on #Multiple page moves. See also, the section lower down this page on #Relevant policies and guidelines.
Notices
- Please add new notices to the top of this section.
- Talk:An Garda Síochána – An Garda Síochána → Garda Síochána – "An" is just the definite article ("the") in Irish and shouldn't be included in the title. Seems to be a rough consensus at the moment. - Iota 03:37, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn → Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, over a redirect page – The latter is the book's actual title (see [1]). --Calton | Talk 01:02, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Southern Kurdistan – Southern Kurdistan → Kurdistan – Article Kurdistan already has this material incorporated. Article is not notable enough to stay on its own, it is not more than a stub on its own. Kurdistan Article needs information as well. — --Cool Cat My Talk 12:26, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Tsetse fly – Tsetse fly → Tsetse – The older usage is antiquated and reduandant, see the second paragraph of the current page for details. --acuster 22:03, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:One half – One half → ½ – ½ is in ISO 8859-1, and more people would want to link [[½]] than [[One half|½]] — KelisFan2K5 12:51, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Wikipedia talk:Avoid using meta-templates: Wikipedia:Avoid using meta-templates → User:Netoholic/Avoid using meta-templates or m:Avoid using meta-templates – This is a personal opinion piece by one user, and should be acknowledged as such. — Susvolans (pigs can fly) 12:27, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- talk:Mis - Mis → Teddy Bear (film). This is the Polish title of a film entitled Teddy Bear in English - per Wikipedia policy I believe that the main entry needs to be the English language title -Teddy Bear (film)-or something like that... Tried to move it myself but the page directed me here. Benzamin
- Must have been some temporary technical problem (there are lots of those right now), as I managed to move it just now. (Although looking at the preview now, the link above is still red...) / Tupsharru 16:43, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Jäger (military)
- Jäger (military) → Jäger
- Jäger → Jäger (disambiguation)
- There is no need for disambiguation in the page title, since all the other kinds of Jägers have different names. —Michael Z. 2005-03-31 01:34 Z
- Talk:Assassin – Assassin → Assassination – I believe this article should be moved in accordance with just about every other article I've seen in Wikipedia. Two random examples would be despotism or murder, both which describe the act/concept, not the despot or murderer. — tomf688 (talk) 00:37, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Capitalism.org – Capitalism.org → Capitalism Magazine – {Capitalism Magazine owns/runs Capitalism.org, not the other way around, and is more significant. Thanks,} — Dave 05:49, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)
- * Talk:Home Rule Act 1914 – Home Rule Act 1914 → Government of Ireland Act 1914 – The only reason it won't move automatically is because I prevented a double-redirect on a previous move. Having discussed it on the Talk: page and bought a copy of the actual Act from the House of Lords Record Office, the correct name of the Act is definitely Government of Ireland Act 1914, not Home Rule Act 1914, so this is moving to the correct article name according to the MOS. — OwenBlacker 21:52, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
- United States of Central America → United Provinces of Central America. This is the correct name of the former country. "United States" is incorrect. EdwinHJ | Talk 17:04, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Sentry (comics) – Sentry (comics) -- Sentry – Since there is no page on Sentry (which redirects to Sentry (comics)) it just seems redundant. — DrBat 12:12, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
- Thomas Spriggs Wootton High School - Thomas Sprigg Wootton High School - Some one attempted to cut & paste this. -- Scott eiπ 08:00, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:Iquitos, Peru – Iquitos, Peru → Iquitos – There are no other places/things called Iquitos that are as important as this city of 400 000 inhabitants, which is also capital of the Loreto region. — Tuomas hello 05:16, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:The Allnighter – The Allnighter → The Allnighter (album) – {There is both an album and a movie called The Allnighter. I suggest that the The Allnighter article should be a disambigous article which links to The Allnighter (album) and The Allnighter (movie) respectively.} — Madman332 10:32, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Move is done, dab still needs to be created. Mgm|(talk) 10:42, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)
- John Olof Norquist should be moved to John Norquist. (Cannot be automatically done because a redirect now exists at this page.) No one calls him by his full name; should be moved in the spirit of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. --BaronLarf 15:50, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)
- Saint Augustine High School should be moved to a seperate page, it's own St. Augustine High School. (Cannot be automatically done because a redirect now exists at this page.) Other schools have there own and there was one for itself for awhile. Also it is on the page for the city of san diego. thats is public and could cause controversy --Randomgbear 16:45, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)
- Talk:AmaroK (media player) – AmaroK (media player) → amaroK – {Shorten the name} - minghong 06:59, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

- Talk:Jeremiah (prophet) – Jeremiah (prophet) → Jeremiah – {A Jeremiah (disambiguation) page has been created to redirect to Book of Jeremiah and various secondary meanings. Voting time extended
Voting on the following move requests have been extended to allow for more votes. Please visit them and post your opinion.
- Talk:Flatulence ignition : Flatulence ignition → Fart lighting (split vote based on a past VFD result)

History mergers
With the block compression it is not possible to merge article histories. The following moves have taken place and require the history to be merged when the issue is resolved:
- Callsign/history → Callsign
- Progressive Labor Party (USA)/history → Progressive Labor Party (USA)
- Bicycle Thieves/history → Bicycle Thieves
- Certified Financial Planner/history → Certified Financial Planner
- Military of the United States/history → Military of the United States
- Flag of the Dominican Republic/history → Flag of the Dominican Republic
Procedure for admins
It is important to check to see if the redirect has major history; major history contains information about the addition of current text. (This is sometimes caused by the accidental creation of a duplicate article, or someone doing a cut-and-paste "move", instead of using the "Move this page" button.) Never simply delete such redirect pages, (which we need to keep for copyright reasons).
Major history
There are three ways to deal with a page move with a major history:
- The "right" way is to merge the histories, using the procedure outlined here. This is a slightly fraught procedure, which on rare occasions doesn't work correctly. There are also circumstances (e.g. duplicate pages) where it's not the correct choice anyway. Once done, it cannot be undone, so don't pick this option unless it's definitely the right one.
- Alternatively, the article and the redirect can be swapped. This leaves the bifurcated history, but has less chance of causing problems. Simply move one of the pair to a temporary name, and then delete the new redirect which that move will left behind at the original location; next, move the other page of the pair across to the first one's old location, and delete that left-over new redirect; finally, move the first one from its temporary location to its new name. You will then need to delete the new redirect at the temporary location, and finally fix the old redirect to point at the article again (at this point, it will be pointing to itself). This process also works where edit histories cannot be merged because edit history compression prevents one page being deleted.
- Another option is for redirect pages with major history to be archived into a talk namespace, and a link to them put into the article's talk page. (An example of such a page is a Talk:Network SouthEast, which was originally created as a duplicate article at Network SouthEast and later archived, when the original article was moved from Network South East.)
Minor history
A minor history on the other hand contains no information, e.g. the redirect page Eric Tracy has a minor history but Eric Treacy (which incidentally is the correct spelling) could not be moved there because of a spelling mistake in the original page. Redirect pages with minor histories can simply be deleted.
Tidying up
Whichever of these various options you take, moving pages will create double redirects in any redirects that pointed to the original page location. These must be fixed; click on the "What links here" button of the new page location to check for them. It is the responsibility of the admin doing the move to fix these, though periodically a bot will fix any you miss.
When you remove an entry from this page (whether the move was accepted ot rejected), don't forget to remove the {{move}} tag from the talk page and if a discussion on the move exists on the talk page please add and sign a comment to indicate whether the move was accepted or rejected.
It's worth periodically checking either Category:Requested_moves or here to see if any pages missed this step. Checking either of these regularly has the side-benefit of finding pages where people added the {{Move}} tag to the page, but didn't realize they needed to edit WP:RM as well.
Admins volunteering to do tidying tasks should watch this page for new notices.
Additional notes
A guide for a Requested move section on a talk page
To make it easy for the administrator to see if there is a consensus for a move, if a section discussing the move does not already exist on the talk page of the article to be moved, then please add the following or something similar to the bottom of the page (you can copy and paste this template over):
==Requested move== * the reasons for move copied from [[WP:RM]] ::''Add *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''' followed by an optional one sentence explanation and sign your vote with <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> ===Discussion=== ::''Add any additional comments''
If an section called "Requested move" alreay exists on the talk page then expand the title to:
==Requested move to [[NEW NAME]]== <!-- insert new page name! -->
Multiple page moves
For a single page moves with more than one option for the destiniation name:
- Talk:page to be moved -- page to be moved to new page or new page two etc -- {brief reason for move} -- ~~~~
For block moves:
- Talk:page to be moved -- page to be moved 1 to target page 1
- ...
- page to be moved n to target page n
- {brief reason for move} -- ~~~~
An example of how to request to move a block of pages:
- Talk:The Levellers -- Levellers to Levellers (disambiguation)
- The Levellers to Levellers
- the word "The" should be removed from the Levellers page. -- ~~~~
Another example of how to request to move a block of pages:
- Talk:Third world -- First world to First World,
- Second world to Second World and
- Third world to Third World
- This was a move made earlier in the year as a block move, after listing on this page because all three were blocked by edits to the target pages -- ~~~~
