Radevormwald is a Northrhine-Westfalian municipality in the Oberbergischer Kreis, about 50 km east of Cologne. Radevormwald hears to the eldest towns in the Bergischen country.
The coat of arms of Radevormwald
The arms were granted on November 7, 1934. Radevormwald was a settlement on the eastern borders of the county of Berg. It thus had strategic importance and became a city in the end of the 13th century. The lion in the arms is the lion of the Counts of Berg. The oldest seal of the city, dating from the 14th century, already shows the lion with a key. All later seals show the same image. The origin of the key is not clear. It may have had a religious meaning, but it has also been speculated that it symbolises the iron industry in the town.
In the early 20th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffee Hag albums. These arms show the same composition, but in different colours.
General description
Origin of the name
Radevormwald signifies "clearing before the wood". Also the elder name "Rotha" stands for "clearing". The cleared clearing on the 400 m high height train was invested to build a fixed place against attacking Saxony in prehistoric time.
Position
With normal zero 421 ms about NN the place was the highest situated town in the governmental district Düsseldorf and now lies in the governmental district Cologne. The neighbouring towns are Ennepetal, Breckerfeld, Halver, Wipperfürth, Hückeswagen, Remscheid and Wuppertal.
Character
The town Radevormwald is marked by theirs small and middle-class companies predominantly in the service industry. In view of the Rhine rail with the towns Cologne and Dusseldorf in the west and the transport binding is the town in a margin position. This leaves free spaces for the use of many resources in the area of nature and rest and gets thus the town a relatively high quality of life. A huge number of religious communities have found here their native country. Their churches testify from the variety.
Elder historical buildings, like in many other places of the Bergischen country, are not received. An exception forms the historical garden house in the town park which has gotten over the last town fire in the year 1802.

Wupper villages
A part of the town becomes from Wupper flowed through. This led to the fact that in the places Dahlerau, Vogelsmühle and Dahlhausen which lie in the valley of the Wupper and are called, hence, by the population "Wupperort villages" settled several textile industry. These settlements used the water for the energy production by waterwheel and later by run hydroelectric power plants for own production. With establishment of the working-class dwelling houses by the companies the population figures also increased in the Wupper villages. Also middle class settled, and, above all, in Dahlerau there were many single trading ventures. Nevertheless, by the decline of the textile industry by the end of 20th century as well as the increased mobility most shops surrendered in the Wupper villages - today many former shops are used as dwelling houses.
History
The first documentary mention and town rights
Presumably in the year 1050 the place the first time is mentioned documentary. Klaus Pampus writes in his book " documentary first namings of oberbergischer places " that Radevormwald was the cloister Werden - imperial abbey becoming in the possession and was called at this time " of Rotha".
Between 1309 and 1316 count Adolf VI von Berg the place lends the town rights. The settlement " before the wood " is 1363 in a lends document of the count Wilhelm II von Jülich Berg (as a Herzog he called Wilhelm I.) as a town enclosed with a town wall designated. Radevormwald served among the counts von Berg as border festival against Sauerland of the Brandenburg March.
The high meaning of Radevormwald in Middle Ages arises from the process that it paid mountain 166.5 Gulden for the redemption of pledged land shares of the dukedom Berg, while, e.g., Solingen raised only 88, Elberfelt 84.5 and Hückeswagen only 34.5 golden guilders.
The town prospers. Walls, towers and gates protect the settled trade of the smiths, woolen weavers and garment doers.
In the 16th century there raged two heavy town fires, the first one was in 17th July 1525.
15 years later, in the year 1540 pass parish and the clergy of the town to reformed denomination.
The second big fire of this century lays waste 1571in Radevormwald.
In the year 1620 the place is conquered by reformed Hessen under Philipp the magnanimous. Radevormwald was in the 30-year-old war (1618 to 1648) occasional headquarters and warehouse of the Spaniards and Austria he under the command from Octavio Piccolomini (a general Wallenstein ). 1635 and 1636 take Dutchman and 1638 Westphalian troops the place, 1639 the taking follows once more through Hessen. All these occupations walked along (with murder), looting en, arson en and disgrace of the civil population which was decimated by these processes drastically.
After Westphalian peace (1648) traced the Catholic duke of Berg Philipp Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg (reign 1652 to 1690) in his territory Anabaptist and Mennonites, so that many of them fled. Such a refugee was 1656 ("another specification Adolf von der Leyen from Radevormwald who brought the new trade of the silk weaving mill after Krefeld meant 1650").
In the year 1742 there was in Radevormwald famine.
In 24th August 1802 it came to the last great town fire of Radevormwald in his destructions by the literature. 1833 was recorded for the first time stagecoach local traffic in the surrounding towns and a postal institution was set up. Four years later, in 3rd February 1890 a putting on one side was set up by Krebsöge to Radevormwald. All railroad lines in the environment of the town were typical Royal a Prussian railroad administration local traffic which were built within a largely invested development program from 1885 in completely Germany.
Radevormald was a station on optical Telegrafie pointer telephoto count line (1833 to 1849) from Berlin after Aachen. The location of the pointer telephoto count lay with the today's street "Am Telegraf".

None of the railway stations this local traffic line had an railway - exit signal.
