According to lead singer Chris Martin, the title X&Y is based on the ups and downs of his everyday life. Martin says "My whole day is a mixture of optimism and pessimism in its most extreme forms. And that’s what X&Y is to me. It’s two sides. I like the fact they’re very strong letters, very clear."[1]

According to Coldplay's press release, X&Y was recorded over the past year at studios in the UK and has been produced by Danton Supple (Morrissey, Elbow), Ken Nelson (Badly Drawn Boy, Kings of Convenience) and the band. "We wanted to try new things out, to move our sound along," says Jonny, "but the focus remains on the songs, and Chris's voice is sounding amazing. Everyone is playing at the top of their game."

The album is reputedly influenced by European electronica pioneers Kraftwerk, as well as 70s electronica such as David Bowie and Brian Eno. Johnny Cash is another major influence; he passed away before he could record a song ("'Til Kingdom Come") that the group had written for him. The song was apparently considered for inclusion on the album but dropped from the final cut.

Two album tracks, "White Shadows" and "Fix You" were performed at a secret gig in March 2005. [2] "A Message" was recently performed at a KCRW concert. Coldplay will begin their UK tour in support of X&Y in June, with dates in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands confirmed for July. A North American tour is expected soon after.
