Blaqk Audio

Blaqk Audio is an electronic project, created by and consisting of Davey Havok and Jade Puget, both members of the band AFI. Blaqk Audio features Havok as lyricist and vocalist, with Puget writing all music and programming the synthesizers.[1] Blaqk Audio was recently signed to Interscope Records [2], and is due to release an album sometime this year.[3] The band describes themselves as "Two boys in love with synthesizers and software".[4]

Origins

AFI have increasingly included synthesized elements into their recent albums; the CD booklets for 2003 release Sing the Sorrow and 2006 release Decemberunderground credit Puget with 'programming and keyboards'.[5][6] These synthesized elements are particularly apparent on songs such as Death of Seasons and 37mm. In the August 2006 edition of Guitar World, Puget states that AFI songs 37mm and Love Like Winter were both originally intended as part of the Blaqk Audio side-project.[7]

Havok has stated that he believes the Blaqk Audio concept began at some point between 2001 and 2002.[citation needed] The project went on hiatus for an extended period, before being revived in 2006.[8] Puget worked on the development of Blaqk Audio in his spare time during AFI's tour schedule, writing songs before sending them to Havok to write melodies and lyrics.[citation needed] As Puget has explained, they experimented with a multitude of sounds, from industrial to ambient, and were influenced by a wide variety of electronic music. [9]

In January 2007, Havok and Puget entered the studio to record several songs that will form Blaqk Audio's first album.[10] Puget kept fans apprised with updates through his blog, before the Blaqk Audio Myspace was created in February of 2007. Since then, both members of Blaqk Audio have posted several updates in their Myspace blog.[4]

The New Album

Through their blogs, Havok and Puget have posted lyrics to three songs; Bitter for Sweet[citation needed], Stiff Kittens[citation needed] and Black-Ink Style.[11] Stiff Kittens is seemingly a tribute to Joy Division, as the band were advertised under that name for their first show.

'Bitter for Sweet'

Fans eager to listen to Blaqk Audio were able to count down the days until the release of the first song "Bitter for Sweet" on the Blaqk Audio MySpace where a countdown timer was created. The song was released at 12:00 a.m. PST on March 13, 2007. Havok said in an earlier blog post that; "Lyrically and musically no song represents the feel of the WHOLE album...as a matter of fact when compared, [Bitter for Sweet] is lyrically slightly disparate from the overall content."[4]

Guest Collaborations

According to Tiger Army's MySpace, Nick 13 has provided some backing vocals on the forthcoming album.[12]

Fan Reactions

Response to the release of Bitter for Sweet has been overwhelming; as of the 28rd March 2007, the song has been played on the band's Myspace over one-hundred thousand times, after only being released two weeks prior. On March 15th, 2007, Puget posted a Myspace blog featuring a picture of the first Blaqk Audio fan tattoo.[4] Blaqk Audio fan-sites have quickly established, on Facebook, Myspace and forum communities.
