Ashtabula County is a county located in the U.S. State of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 102,728. Its county seat is Jefferson6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,544 km² (1,368 mi²). 1,819 km² (702 mi²) of it is land and 1,725 km² (666 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 48.67% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 102,728 people, 39,397 households, and 27,774 families residing in the county. The population density is 56/km² (146/mi²). There are 43,792 housing units at an average density of 24/km² (62/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.07% White, 3.16% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 2.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 39,397 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,607, and the median income for a family is $42,449. Males have a median income of $33,105 versus $22,624 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,814. 12.10% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.10% are under the age of 18 and 8.60% are 65 or older.
