IIT Research Institute
The Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI) is an independent, pre-clinical contract research organization (CRO) located in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded in 1936 as a research arm to the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), but is now its own separate entity. The four main divisions of IITRI's services are Toxicology, Inhalation Toxicology, Micro and Molecular Biology, and Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention. IITRI performs the testing that is necessary to submit an Investigational New Drug application to the FDA.
History of IITRI
Divisions of IITRI
Toxicology
General Toxicology tests include acute, subchronic and chronic studies in small animals. ADME assays, Reproductive Toxicology studies, and Pharmacokinetic and Toxicokinetic studies are also usually a part of IND-submission.
Inhalation Toxicology
Inhalation toxicology studies can be run on rodent and non-rodent species. Nose-only and whole body exposures are done using metered dose inhalaers, nebulizers, atomizers, powder dispensers and vapor generation systems. Safety Pharmacology (Telemetry) monitors effects of a drug on the central nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, and urinary/renal systems.
Micro and Molecular Biology
Various testing must be done at the Biologic level to ready a drug for IND-sumbission. Genetic Toxicology, Immunotoxicology and Molecular Biology are all part of this. IITRI has in vivo/in vitro BSL-2 and 3 labs to perform testing.
Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention
Efficacy of a drug and mechanism of action are studied in Carcinogenesis studies.
