Wikipedia:Requested moves

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Kevin Rector (talk | contribs) at 03:11, 12 April 2005 ([[April 12]] [[2005]]: Ted Kennedy). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Requested moves is used to request, and vote on, article moves that are not straight-forward or that require the assistance of Wikipedia administrators. For example, the proposed move may be controversial, or technical expertise may be needed to merge edit histories. The move should usually be discussed on the talk pages of any relevant articles first, particularly where a page move may be controversial. For simple uncontraversial moves follow the advice at Help:Renaming (moving) a page instead.

Page moves requested on this page may be actioned if is a rough consensus supporting the moving of an article after five (5) days under discussion on the talk page of the article to be moved, or earlier at the discretion of an administrator.

If you want to merge two articles please make a request at Wikipedia:Duplicate articles instead of here.

Instructions

What to do on the talk page

  • Add a note to the talk page of the article you wish to move (not the article itself) using the {{move}} template. This template should be inserted at the top of the page using the following text:
{{move|new name}}
replacing the words "new name" with the name of the destination page to where you wish to move the article. This produces the following text on the page where you inserted it:

This template must be substituted. Replace {{Requested move ...}} with {{subst:Requested move ...}}.

To make it easy for the administrator to see if there is a consensus for a move, if a section discussing the move does not already exist on the talk page of the article to be moved, then please add a section. See the section below in Additional notes for an example.

What to do on this Requested moves page

To aid the administrators, add a line with the days date on it directly under the heading of the Notices subsection, if it has not already been added for this day.

===[[date]] [[year]]===

Requests added to "Requested move" a page should have the following format:

For a single page move to a new name add a line at the top of the section under the date line:

* [[Talk:page to be moved]] – [[page to be moved]] → [[new name]] – {reason for move} — ~~~~

For more complicated requests see the section lower down this page on #Multiple page moves. See also, the section lower down this page on #Relevant policies and guidelines.

Notices

Please add new notices to the top of this section.
  1. His name is Edward Kennedy.
  2. There are more articles linking to Edward Kennedy than there are linking to Ted Kennedy.
  3. I would like to make Ted Kennedy into a disambiguation that would point to both Edward Kennedy and Ted Kennedy (hockey player).
  4. Ted Kennedy (hockey player) was a hall of fame professional hockey player.

Could someone help me with this please? Kevin Rector (talk) 03:11, Apr 12, 2005 (UTC)

  • Talk:Cobo HallCobo HallCobo Center – Detroit's "Cobo" complex includes both a convention center (home of Detroit's Auto Show) and a sports arena (former home of the Detroit Pistons and numerous historic musical concerts.) Informal usage of the term "Cobo Hall" can apply to both the location of well-known concerts, and of the adjacent convention center. The informal term "Cobo Hall" should become a Wikipedia:disambiguation page branching to both "Cobo Center" and "Cobo Arena." Is it ok to do this? --hadley 02:20, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • talk:Joan Dale -- Joan DaleJoan Dale (DC Comics) – I created this page as a redirect to Miss America (DC Comics), since she seems to be better known nowadays as Joan rather than as her heroic name. I was intending to immediately move it to the latter name, but the system won't let me! Says that I'm too new. — Chyel 04:32, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
  • Talk:Liberal christianity - Liberal christianityLiberal Christianity - {No set page dealing with Liberal Christianity existed, so I edited the redirect page titled Liberal christianity(lower case c) to start an the article. This lower case c redirect page was previously redirecting to Christian Left, which was not an accurate description of Liberal Christianity. There is another redirect called Liberal Christianity(note capital C) which was redirecting to Liberal theology and has a number of pages using it as a redirect. All the references on those pages however are relevant to the new article I have written. I can include a reference to Liberal theology in the new article I have written to draw peoples attention to Liberal theology article. This would streamline the liberal christianity section with regards to the category of liberal christianity and it's logical sub-category liberal theology by placing in some type of logical order, rather than two seperate redirects taken it in totally different directions, depending on what angle you come at the subject from. ie Liberal christianity with a lower case c or Liberal Christianity with a capital C}. All articles could redirect to one redirect page, Liberal Christianity, and from there to Liberal theology -- Randolph 22:28, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Talk:GML -- GML -> Game Maker Language, GML expands to other acronyms such as Geography Markup Language, I've placed wiki markup at Talk:GML for turning it into a disambiguation page. Moreati 12:06, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
This isn't a "requested move". It is a request to edit to a page to to turn a redirect into a disambiguation. Philip Baird Shearer 12:02, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Talk:Belfast Agreement -- Belfast Agreement -> Good Friday Agreement. I think that this agreement is far better known as the Good Friday Agreement, it is certainly the name most often used by news outlets here in the UK. Links to the two are roughly equal, although a brief sample suggests that a fair few of the links to the former are actually rendered as the latter in the relevent articles. This might be a contentious move so I have listed it here. Rje 01:23, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)
  • Talk:Samir Azzouz -- Please move Samir Azzouz back to Samir A.. See Talk:Samir Azzouz for details. Someone made an account (HenrySixt) only to be able to move this page back. I don't understand how he was able to that it, or someone else did it, but why?. --Jeroenvrp 23:47, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Talk:University of Texas at Brownsville - University of Texas at BrownsvilleUniversity of Texas at Brownsville-Texas Southmost College - The title of the article refers only to a subset of the institution rather than the entire institution. The proposed title is more appropriate as it is the official name of the institution and it acknowledges the existing partnership between both institutions. (NB: There is a separate article for Texas Southmost College, but refers to historic Texas Southmost College. The University of Texas at Brownsville never existed as a distinct institution.)-- KwaziMF 19:25, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • deaflympicssportCategory:Olympics. The article has been expanded considerably, and feel it's moved past the "stub" title. As it's an IOC event, it should be under the Olympics category
    This wasn't a page move, it was just a removal of a stub template reference and addition of category:Olympics. I have done this. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 14:45, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Talk:Péter Cardinal ErdõPéter Cardinal ErdõPéter Erdo – the title contains an incorrect character (õ); the actual ő should be substituted by o. On the other hand, the word "cardinal" may not be desirable in the page title; I don't know (is the word order all right at all?). – Adam78 16:17, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I've seen on the talk page that it's completely all right to have the word cardinal within the name, but Péter Cardinal Erdõ still should be renamed to Péter Cardinal Erdo. --Adam78 13:53, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Talk:Neural_network#page_move - Neural network - Artificial neural networks - This article discusses artificial neural networks (ANN's), which are models of neural networks in the brain, and only very briefly mentions the real neural networks (which are called "biological" neural networks in the article). ANN's is the correct name, they are usually called "ANN's", that is "artificial" is added to "neural networks" to distinguish them from the "real" networks of neurons, which are called "neural networks" (from "neural" = "nerve-"). The name "neural network" is incorrect, introduced by some people who claimed "we are building the brain" and repeated by others. However, the "A" should only omitted when the context is clear, which is not the case here in a general purpose encyclopedia. We don't have an article about neural networks, i.e. about information processing in the brain, compare connectionism, parallel distributed processing. Having said all that, the name "Neural networks" should be made free for an article about neural networks (i.e. the real ones) and the models be moved to "artificial neural networks", because they are just models of neural networks, or applications of neural network theory. Topics in cognitive science, neuroscience, philosophy, and neuropychology are chronically underrepresented in wikipedia and we should do something against it, at least by giving the correct names to articles as in this case. Procedure for admins

It is important to check to see if the redirect has major history; major history contains information about the addition of current text. (This is sometimes caused by the accidental creation of a duplicate article, or someone doing a cut-and-paste "move", instead of using the "Move this page" button.) Never simply delete such redirect pages, (which we need to keep for copyright reasons).

Major history

There are three ways to deal with a page move with a major history:

  1. The "right" way is to merge the histories, using the procedure outlined here. This is a slightly fraught procedure, which on rare occasions doesn't work correctly. There are also circumstances (e.g. duplicate pages) where it's not the correct choice anyway. Once done, it cannot be undone, so don't pick this option unless it's definitely the right one.
  2. Alternatively, the article and the redirect can be swapped. This leaves the bifurcated history, but has less chance of causing problems. Simply move one of the pair to a temporary name, and then delete the new redirect which that move will left behind at the original location; next, move the other page of the pair across to the first one's old location, and delete that left-over new redirect; finally, move the first one from its temporary location to its new name. You will then need to delete the new redirect at the temporary location, and finally fix the old redirect to point at the article again (at this point, it will be pointing to itself). This process also works where edit histories cannot be merged because edit history compression prevents one page being deleted.
  3. Another option is for redirect pages with major history to be archived into a talk namespace, and a link to them put into the article's talk page. (An example of such a page is a Talk:Network SouthEast, which was originally created as a duplicate article at Network SouthEast and later archived, when the original article was moved from Network South East.)

Minor history

A minor history on the other hand contains no information, e.g. the redirect page Eric Tracy has a minor history but Eric Treacy (which incidentally is the correct spelling) could not be moved there because of a spelling mistake in the original page. Redirect pages with minor histories can simply be deleted.

Tidying up

Whichever of these various options you take, moving pages will create double redirects in any redirects that pointed to the original page location. These must be fixed; click on the "What links here" button of the new page location to check for them. It is the responsibility of the admin doing the move to fix these, though periodically a bot will fix any you miss.

When you remove an entry from this page (whether the move was accepted ot rejected), don't forget to remove the {{move}} tag from the talk page and if a discussion on the move exists on the talk page please add and sign a comment to indicate whether the move was accepted or rejected.

It's worth periodically checking either Category:Requested_moves or here to see if any pages missed this step. Checking either of these regularly has the side-benefit of finding pages where people added the {{Move}} tag to the page, but didn't realize they needed to edit WP:RM as well.

Admins volunteering to do tidying tasks should watch this page for new notices.

Blocked history mergers

If block compression stops the required merge of a copy/paste move then move the history to /history and use {{pending merge}}. For example, Bicycle Thieves was moved to Bicycle Thieves/history and {{pending merge|Bicycle Thieves}} placed on the article.

This also adds Category:Pending merge, all of which will be done when the issue is resolved.

Additional notes

A guide for a Requested move section on a talk page

To make it easy for the administrator to see if there is a consensus for a move, if a section discussing the move does not already exist on the talk page of the article to be moved, then please add the following or something similar to the bottom of the page (you can copy and paste this template over):

==Requested move==
* the reasons for move copied from [[WP:RM]]
::''Add *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''' followed by an optional one sentence explanation and sign your vote with <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>
===Discussion===
::''Add any additional comments''

If an section called "Requested move" alreay exists on the talk page then expand the title to:

==Requested move to [[NEW NAME]]== <!-- insert new page name! -->
