The 2004 UEFA Champions League Final took place at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on May 26, 2004. The match was between French club AS Monaco, in their first European final, and Portuguese club FC Porto, the UEFA Cup winners the previous season. This was also the second time Porto had appeared in the Champions League final. Porto were the favourites after knocking out Manchester United in the second round of the competition, while Monaco had knocked out Real Madrid and Chelsea. The match itself was pretty much one-sided: despite an early opportunity when Monaco captain Ludovic Giuly found himself with a clear way to goal, only to lose the ball to a daring outing by FC Porto goalkeeper Vítor Baía, goals from Carlos Alberto, Deco and Dmitri Alenichev were enough to give Porto their second European Cup. Two days later, manager José Mourinho left Porto to take over as Chelsea boss.

Trivia

Straight after receiving his medal - and with his team stood on the podium raising the trophy - manager José Mourinho left the field and removed the medal from around his neck. He confirmed in a live television interview that he was almost certain to take on the management role at English Premiership team, Chelsea. He was confirmed as Chelsea manager just a few days later. He never appeared in an official winners photograph with Porto.
