Ginta Toramizu (虎水ギンタ Toramizu Ginta) is the main character of MÄR (Märchen Awakens Romance), an anime and manga series by Nobuyuki Anzai.

Ginta is brought to the fantasy world of Mär Heaven by a boy named Alviss so that he can save the world from the Chess Pieces. He uses the unique ÄRM Babbo, which was used by the head of the Chess Pieces six years prior, to create Team MÄR and defeat the Chess once and for all.

Story

Ginta is a fourteen year-old boy in middle school in Japan. He is also in 8th grade. He has always had a daydreaming problem; falling asleep in class happens on a regular basis. Ginta's dreams are about a fantasy world in which he is the hero. On many occasions he tells Koyuki, the only person who believes that his dreams are real, about the dreams and how one day he will go to the place he sees when he's asleep. Many of his classmates and teachers pick on him for sleeping in class and Ginta often ends up getting beat up or running around the school as punishment.

Ginta's mother doesn't like to hear of his dreams because of his father who disappeared about six years ago. He had the same dreams as well and she is worried that Ginta will leave her. She writes fairy tales, or märchen, for a living. She also playfully beats Ginta up for playing too many video games and slacking off at school.

Beginning

One day at school Ginta enters a strange world called Mär Heaven through an ÄRM called the Gate Keeper Clown. Koyuki wishes to come with him, but the gate only allows Ginta through since he can only guarantee the safety of one passenger. Mär Heaven turns out to be the world from his dreams. In this world, Ginta's poor eyesight is healed and his strength has increased tenfold because of the immense decrease in gravity. (though this not explain his eyesight improvent and why "Mär Natives" aren't as strong) He can also run rather fast and jump higher.

Dorothy arc

Not long after entering Mär Heaven, Ginta meets a witch named Dorothy who introduces him to the ways of Mär Heaven. Then soon after, Ginta finds a powerful ÄRM called Babbo. After aruging with Dorothy over keeping it, she lets him have it because its too heavy for her to wield.

Babbo arc

The two have mixed opinions and ideas but after Ginta defeats two kidnappers him and Babbo became friends but still have differences, each calling the other a subordinate.

Jack arc

The two then go to a farm in which they start feasting on several crops, only to be attacked by Jack, who thought they were werewolves. The two help Jack face his fears and defeat the Rogulu Brothers, Garu and Ruga, who were the real werewolves that stole from Jack's farm. Jack's mom reprimanded him for trying to fight the werewolves, but later decided to thanks Ginta, and made Jack follow Ginta on a 'quest to become a true man'.

Alvis arc

They meet him when Ginta is attacked by another thief guild members and is rescued by Alvis. Alvis curses him for releasing Babbo, thus releasing Phantom. And the two battle, Ginta losing from exhaustion. Alvis then tells Ginta to get stronger and protect Babbo but not like he supported him more like he despises him.

Chess Pieces

Ginta and his gang discover that things are becoming chaotic in the land and train vigorously until they meet someone new. Like in a regular chess game, the are ranked according to importance in a chess game, king and queen being the highest, and pawn and rooks being the lowest.

Edward/Snow arc

Meeting the dog Edward the gang take off to rescue Snow. However they are attacked by Ian and Loco who almost kill them. Ginta is barely able to hold his own as he uses his freaky and poorly planned moves that surprise the two. Alan appears and rescues the three though, reviving Snow in the process. Ginta and Snow share a kiss (seemingly by accident), after she is freed from the ice.

Training arc

This is basically when Ginta and Snow/Jack and Dorothy (in teams of two respectively) train inside Edward/Allan's dimension ÄRM. During training, Babbo unlocks his first, second and third forms. Jack's Battle Shovel is also given characteristics of an Earth ÄRM thanks to Dorothy's magic stones.

Nanashi arc

Ginta, Jack, Snow and Dorothy have finished training in the Training Gate, and Ed the dog is back. Jack spots Ginta wearing a dogtag, which he says Snow made. (The dogtag features a relief of Babbo sticking his nose upwards) Becoming madly jealous, Dorothy offers Ginta her Ring Dagger, which he declines due to the fact that he had invented a Dagger ARM for Babbo, therefore upsetting her. Ed then reveals a Dimension ARM that will carry them to the Hilt Continent (it looked like a magic carpet, as Ginta pointed out). But when they come over the country of Luberia, they are attacked, bringing them back to land. A group of people gather around them, and one of them accused them of being Chess Pieces, getting confused when he finds that they are not. He says his name is Nanashi, and several people have to carry him off when he notices Snow and Dorothy. Nanashi invites them back to the Thieves Guild fort, and takes them to a memorial site where many Luberian comrades have been buried, which upsets Ginta. Someone suddenly tells Nanashi that Chess Pieces had been sighted in the beautiful water town of Vestry. Nanashi then uses a common Dimension ARM called Andarta to teleport them to Vestry. Seeing the town in a sorry state disappoints Ginta. The Chess Pieces are hiding in the Underwater Lake beneath Vestry.

War Games

The Chess Pieces declared a war game to destroy those who oppose them, and try to get new ÄRMs. Ginta's clan, MÄR, decided to enter it to destroy the Chess Pieces. The Cross Guards have also joined, but all but one managed to survive the qualifying round, where they had to fight a chess piece depending on which magic stone they take. Team MÄR survived unscathed as they fought pawns. Alviss, too, easily qualified, but Daina, Cross Guard's third in command was badly injured as he fought a high rank Chess Piece. Then, MÄR continued to progress. During first battle, Ginta realized that the Boss (Danna, in Japanese) sounded strangely familiar and concluded that Boss was his father. Jack also concluded that his dad fought alongside Boss against the Chess Pieces and both agreed they had a new purpose to destroy the Chess Pieces to avenge their dads.

Ginta's ÄRM: Babbo

Babbo has many ways of attacking, different "versions" of Babbo that can attack. However, these versions cannot be accessed without the Magic Stones that are attributed to them. Babbo can also change sizes, which is why he weighs so much.

Before Ginta acquires any of these Stones, he uses the ÄRM like a kendama or just whips it around. However, this proves to be rather ineffective. Ginta later finds out that data is recorded in Babbo through his imagination; the greater the form imagined the more powerful it will be. In total there are eight spots for Magic Stones, four on each side. In the series, these different forms are referred to as "versions".

Version 1-A: Hammer ÄRM; 1-B: Dagger ÄRM

  • Ginta's fist and Babbo merge together to create a metal ball (hammer) or a dagger. In this mode Babbo can telepathically communicate with Ginta. This version is mainly used for close range fighting.

Version 2: Bubble Launcher

  • Babbo turns into a gun with which Ginta can fire exploding bubbles that look like Babbo. Ginta uses this for long range fighting or as cover.

Version 3: Gargoyle

  • Gargoyle takes a lot of magical power to use. Babbo turns into a giant Gargoyle creature that levitates above the ground on a giant crystal. Because this version is a guardian ÄRM Ginta can't move when he uses it, but it also is very dangerous; if he is reckless with it, Ginta's spirit energy will be crushed. It was first sighted in the underground lake defeating a chess piece, and blasting a way out for Ginta.

Version 4: Holy Guardian Alice

  • Babbo turns into an angelic female Guardian ÄRM that uses healing magic, which is effective for counter-attack and protection against Darkness ÄRMs.Babbo is embarrassed after the transformation.

Ginta also used it in the battle with Kannochi.

Version 5: Cushion Jelly

  • Babbo turns into a giant pudding that covers Ginta entirely and absorbs all physically destructive attacks used by the enemy. The one drawback is that this move will render Ginta motionless.

Version 6: Puss in Boots

  • Babbo turns into a giant Puss in Boots, gaining immense speed and the ability to use other ÄRMs.

Version 7: Union

  • A spell that reunites the separated.

Version 8: Gate Keeper Clown

  • Babbo transforms into an exact replica of the Gate Keeper Clown allowing a certain number of people, determined by the dice roll of the Gate Keeper, to go into the real world from MÄR-Heaven.Ginta and his dad meets up with Koyuki and went back home.
