NC 75 is a twenty-one mile North Carolina state highway. It runs entirely through Union County. In the most part it is a rural highway, and only occasional cities slow it down.

Route description

Western Terminus

NC 75 officially begins at the North Carolina-South Carolina state border. It goes on as SC 75, where that road continues for 13 miles and ends at SC 5 at Van Wyck. The road enters the state 6 miles west of Waxhaw with a speed limit of 55 mph.

The Drive

After crossing the border, NC 75 is paralleled by a CSX railline. Six miles after crossing the border, NC 75 enters downtown Waxhaw. It is the southern terminus for NC 16. In downtown Waxhaw, the speed limit is 20 mph.

After leaving downtown Waxhaw, NC 75 bends at old NC 75 and rolls through some hills and twists and turns. It goes past the Museum of the Waxhaws.

Five miles after passing Waxhaw, NC 75 goes down from 55 mph to 35 mph for Mineral Springs. After quickly going through downtown, NC 75 pulls away from Mineral Springs and is practically home-free for the ten mile drive to Monroe.

Southern Terminus

Oddly, after meeting up with NC 84, the two multiplex for one mile before they both end at NC 200 in downtown Monroe. The purpose of NC 75 is primarily to hook western Union County with the county seat in Monroe. Also it is the main way for Monroe residents to connect with NC 16, a major commuter road.

History

  • Before 1927: NC 75 was originally the forerunner to US 15, US 64 and US 501. It ran from Lenoir eastward to the Virginia border.
  • 1927: The western half of NC 75 was chopped off to make way for US 64 and NC 90. Then there was more rerouting with NC 75, moving the terminus to Rockingham.
  • 1933: NC 75 is eliminated, cut off by NC 75. Parts of the old highway are now NC 22, NC 27, NC 211 and NC 73.
  • 1935: The current NC 75 is known as NC 25, before this year it is given the NC 75 status.
  • 1970s: A section between Waxhaw and Mineral Springs was rebuilt in the mid 1970s. It cut off about 3 miles.
