The Roots of Heaven is a film based on the novel by Romain Gary. Director John Huston and Producer Darryl F Zanuck were both interested in a film version. Produced by 20th Century Fox William Holden backed out leaving the multi Million dollar production without a star. Trevor Howard replaced Holden. Errol Flynn assumed top billing. He had success with a similar part for Darryl F Zanuck in The Sun Also Rises (1957).

The story of a crusading environmentalist out to preserve the Elephants as a lasting symbol of freedom for all humanity , with the help of his group of followers, was filmed on location in French Equatorial Africa. Cast and Crew suffered from the heat, malaria and other tropical diseases.

It is the memories of the challenging location that Flynn mentions with affection in his memoirs My Wicked, Wicked Ways (1959)
