Jackie Pullinger of the St. Stephen's Society has been working with the poor in Hong Kong for almost 40 years. She revealed in her book, Chasing the Dragon, that she was called by God to Hong Kong to work amongst drug addicts living in the Kowloon Walled City.
In 1966, she left home in England without knowing where she was going, and got off the boat in Hong Kong. She wandered around for a while saying “Jesus loves you”, following David Wilkerson’s example, minimizing the amount of Chinese she would need to master. She received the reply “Run along”. She tried inviting them to church, but they said, I don’t have Sunday off, or I can’t read, or I don’t have nice clothes, which is what they thought was needed. She got a room inside the walled city, and was kind to the poor, the drug addicts, the prostitutes, the gang members, the dentists. They said "She is cracked about Jesus, but otherwise she is ok."
She talks about the parable of the feast. In those days, two invitations were given: one for planning, and one when the food was ready, and you must come right away when the food is ready. But many who accepted initially found they were constrained by other priorities when they were told that the feast was ready. She asks if we are ready.
The book title, Chasing the dragon, is a term that refers to inhaling waves of heroin smoke.
