Location: Western Rhodopes, Bulgaria

The dam of Dospat is situated in the heart of the fairy Rhodope mountains, in immediate proximity of the town of the same name, at distance of 82 km west of the town of Smolyan. Located 1200 meters above the sea level it is the highest dam in Bulgaria and with its 22 000 decares water area - the second one in size. The nature around the dam is incredible. After the last turn along the road to Dospat, just before the town, rightwards in front of your eyes reveals a marvelous view. The first thought that comes into your mind is that you are in heaven. The dam sparkles as pure and crystal as a diamond, and opposite it the steep slopes of the Rhodope mountains are picturesquely stud with houses and hotels. Old pine forests surround the lake like a ring and the fragrance of resin in the air enchants you. The dam is rich in fish. It is stocked with perch, grey mullet, carp, trout and etc. There are marvelous conditions for sport fishing. Several types of fishing are practiced: via swimmer, via fly, and others. In the surrounding areas are situated the dams of Vatca, Sarnitsa, Beglika, Batak, and of Shiroka polyana. The location of the dam in the immediate proximity of the town of Dospat and the beautiful nature offer great opportunities for recreation and tourism.
