Deerhunter

Deerhunter are a five-piece band from Atlanta, Georgia consisting of Bradford Cox, Moses Archuleta, Josh Fauver, Colin Mee, and Lockett Pundt. The band's singer, Bradford Cox, suffers from Marfan syndrome. Cox was born in Athens, Georgia. Deerhunter's drummer, Moses Archuleta, currently works for American Apparel.[1]

History

The band was co-founded in 2001 by Bradford Cox and drummer/keyboardist Moses Archuleta.[1] Before the recording of their first album “Turn It Up Faggot”, the group's first bassist, Justin Bosworth, passed away in a skateboarding accident. This influenced the sound of the album because it was a product of “a lot of negativity”.[2] Bradford Cox has stated at the conclusion of the record that he doesn’t “ever want to make this album again”.[2]

Their second album, Cryptograms, was released by Kranky in January of 2007. The first half of the album sounds distinctly psychedelic. The second half (which begins with "Spring Hall Convert") consists of relatively organized pop songs (a "verse-chorus-verse" format). Upon release, their CD garnered the title of "Best New Music" from Pitchfork Media. In May 2007, the band released the “Whirlyball” 7” single which was available at only one store in Georgia, Atlanta: “Criminal Records”. The single also acted as a ticket to a show, which featured the band along with The Carbonas, Selmanaries and The Coathangers. The single was available online for a limited time after the show due to popular demand, but only 100 black vinyls and 100 clear vinyls were pressed.[3]

The quintet's next album, to come out in 2008, is called Microcastle. One of the songs from the record whose title has been confirmed as "Twilight at Carbon Lake", has been described by Bradford Cox as "doo-wop, 50s/early 60s, Everly Brothers".[4]

Lead singer Bradford Cox is also working on a solo project under the name Atlas Sound.

Touring

Deerhunter have garnered a reputation for their intense live shows. Lead singer Bradford Cox, frequently wears sundresses and has performed with fake blood smeared over his face and hands, their live show being "much more savage" than their albums.[5] In his explanation of the sundresses Bradford Cox has said "I don't like the idea of going around stage in just jeans and a t-shirt. It seems anticlimactic."[4]

Past Touring

  • Deerhunter played with TV On The Radio at the Spring Fling outside Connecticut's Wesleyan University.
  • They supported Liars during a portion of their American tour in May 2006, playing in Georgia and a host of other places like California and Texas.
  • Likewise, they supported Yeah Yeah Yeahs on their tour of Georgia. Lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and professed fan, Karen O, has hailed Deerhunter's live shows as a "religious experience".[6]
