Magistrate

A magistrate is a minor civil officer with limited authority to administer and enforce law, involved with judiciary matters, i.e. a justice of the peace.

Derived from Middle English word "magistrat" from Old French, from Latin "magisträtus", from magister; magistr-, meaning "master".
