Mangalore International Airport (IATA: IXE, ICAO: VOML) (formerly Bajpe Airport) is the domestic and international airport serving coastal city Mangalore, India.
Overview
Mangalore International Airport (IATA: IXE) is located near Bajpe, around 20km north-east of the city centre. Until 2005, its small 1.6 km (5,200 ft) runway meant that it could only handle Boeing 737-sized aircraft. However, on January 10, 2006 an Airbus 319 of Kingfisher Airlines was the first aircraft in that class to land on this runway [1]. Furthermore, a new international length (2.9 km) runway was constructed and commissioned on 10 May 2006. With larger aircraft now able to fly to Mangalore, a proposal to build a new terminal building, which will reduce the distance between Mangalore city and the airport by about 7km, is under consideration. Construction of the terminal building would start likely in January 2007 and take about 19 months time according to the Airports Authority of India. [2]
At present, daily flights are available to Mumbai, Bangalore(via Night landing facilities have been installed in order to facilitate International and long distance internal flights. On 3 October 2006, an Air-India Express Boeing 737-800 (flight IX-802) from Dubai became the first international flight to land at Mangalore, touching down at 6:11 (IST). [3].Then later ,on February 15 2007 the second Air India Express Flight IX830 departed Abu Dhabi at 4:30pm (UAEST) arrived Muscat at 5:00pm (OST)Then departed Muscat at 6:00pm and arrived Mangalore at 10:25pm.[4].On March 25, the third Air India Express Flight arrived Mangalore from Doha at 2303hrs.[5] At present the construction of a modern arrival hall is nearing completion. it is located next to the existing terminal. After the completion the the existing terminal will become the departure hall and the arrivals will be transfered to the new building. It is expected to be complete by may 2007. At present there are 15 international flights a week and 56 domestic flights a week.
