County Templates

I undid the Centerville change on the Greene County template. Centerville recently annexed into Sugarcreek Twp in Greene County (http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_action=doc&p_docid=116DBDB2D16DF5B8&p_docnum=7). I'm also updating the Miami County template to represent Clayton as city. Clayton recently annexed into Miami County; this is shown on the new 2007 Transportation Map (http://www.dot.state.oh.us/map1/ohiomap). Good idea on separating the cities and village, btw.

Thanks!

Thanks for adding county navigation templates to various Ohio County articles. I have two questions for you - what do think of using the state county locator map instead of the Ohio flag in the top left corner? Also, what about dividing cities and villages? (See {{Hancock County, Ohio}} or any Pennsylvania county for examples, although PA has cities and boroughs.) Keep up the good work and thanks again! Ruhrfisch 04:45, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry to be slow in replying. I would try to use free images in the boxes, because fair use images may be removed (they are best used in as few places as possible and a county nav box will be on a dozen or more pages). Flags or seals are often not free and as you point out are hard to come by - every county has a locator map (though svg format is better if available). I admit that I am partial to the maps as they give location info within the state and are all the same size (one reason I switched over all the PA county nav boxes to maps). However, as long as all the nav boxes are consistent, I think it is fine whatever is done (same argument applies to the cities and villages being split or not). One place to raise these questions would be at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ohio. That way there would be consensus. If you do raise the question, I would also ask about the Township only nav boxes on some counties. Bottom line - my preference is svg maps in the corners and split lines for cities and villages, but I would still ask at the WikiProject Ohio to see what the consensus is. Hope this sort of answers your question, Ruhrfisch 05:30, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ohio geography stubs...

At first I wondered why Category:Ohio geography stubs had more than doubled in size in a week... then I came across your contribution history! There's now so many that they'll need to be split into smaller stub types (presumably by county, or larger region like MAs). So I'm wondering if you can tell me... How many further articles are you planning on adding, in total? Do you have numbers on how they break down by county? And, if you're going to be working on these further, would you be willing to re-tag some of them youself? Thanks. Alai 10:10, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply, and the information. An Ohio-township-stub would be a possibility, though it looks like it'd leave a lot of others behind (I assume mainly municipality). By the sounds of it, not many (or any) individual counties will be viable for their own stub type, but if we create a stub template per county, it leaves open the option of grouping several counties into a category for each MA, or other region -- assuming those have some official or generally accepted standing, at least enough to be relatively useful and not overly contentious. I notice that Extreme Northwest Ohio is handily defined in terms of a neat list of counties, for example; if that and similarly-sized regions would be sensible, I'll propose those over at WP:WSS/P. Retagging should indeed by doable by 'bot; if the worst comes to the worst, I can wait until the next db dump and use the data from that, but it's probably also more or less OK to just do it by a sweep through each of the "live" county categories. (Worst thing that's likely to happen is the occasional error on articles categorised by more than one county, but I should be able to avoid that too if I'm careful.) Alai 23:24, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Basically I mean templates like {{Ashtabula-geo-stub}}, {{BrownOH-geo-stub}}, etc, populating categories such as Category:Greater Cleveland geography stubs and Category:Cincinnati geography stubs (or explicitly including the CSA names if they would be better). What are the next few (say, 6-10) you're planning on working on? Alai 15:40, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, completely. Feel free to do so for any that come to hand. I had vague plans of doing so for all the remaining counties, but as it wasn't quite clear what to do with them category-wise, my efforts slightly stalled. Alai 15:47, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thought: gazing at this map, it occurs to me that there's a block of metro- and micropolitan SAs in the east of the state, including only two "balance" counties; south of that, only five counties are metros or micros, and all the rest are balance. I wonder if it would make sense to have Category:Eastern Ohio geography stubs, containing Muskingum-Wheeling-Trumbull-Ashland; and Category:Southern Ohio geography stubs, containing everything south of those, and Columbus CSA, and east of the Cincinnati CSA. Or is that just shameless OR on my part? Alai 12:15, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trouble is that it's only very loosely based on a USCB map: they have no such line between "eastern" and "southern", other than the one vaguely implied by the transition between (different) statistical areas. I'm not sure if I'm uncomfortable doing it the river/others way you suggested earlier, as just looking for stronger justification one way or another. I notice that the Ohio state gov. seems to use "Appalachian" to include the river counties, but does sub-divide those into three sub-regions: East Central, South East, and Southern [1]. Those also overlap with several CSAs, mind you, but we could ignore that small detail. Alai 15:46, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I think I'll go ahead and use those, then. I've not the least problem with your "flexibility" on this: it's just useful to a a sanity check from someone who's at least somewhat well-informed (and it makes a mostly-pleasant change from those cases where people have too many opinions, with too little room for variance, which seems to happen on the least obvious of cases). Alai 16:33, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, working on this now. Why, though, did you 'move' Clinton County? It's not in Appalachian Ohio, and it is in the Cincinnati (et al) CSA (being the Wilmnington Micropolitan SA). Alai 20:19, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, I wrote that one in terms of the MSA, rather than the CSA, before going on to use the CSAs for the other two. I think the CSA definition would be preferable, so if you don't mind editing the map, yet again, then please... Alai 21:55, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Either, really. It's generally not worth the multi-stubbing if the number gets unduly large, thtough (either as a proportion, or in absolute terms). Alai 22:49, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that'd be perfectly OK. Alai 00:29, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't do this. It's not actually necessary — were I to move the page there I'd need to delete the whole page, which is different from blanking. I appreciate the thought, though :) Thanks, Kyle Barbour 20:39, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing, I was just being a moron :( I've moved the page now. I thought I'd seen something wrong and hadn't, actually :) My mistake, sorry. Kyle Barbour 20:48, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, as for New Russia Township, Lorain County, Ohio: perfectly fine new name for it, and I've done the move, but please please please don't cut and paste moves. It messes up our GFDL compliance (see Wikipedia:Copyrights) and screws with things in general. It's not a huge deal, and it's all taken care of, but you may want to take a gander at WP:MOVE. Thanks! I can't close the articles, actually, because I am not an administrator. But I am considering taking this problem to the administrator's noticeboard. I'll let you know when I write up an explanation of the problem. Natalie 17:38, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've just found out that the two editors that were revert warring have both been blocked for 48 hours, so the articles will be stable until at least then. Natalie 17:41, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Understandable. I had reported them both, so I figured to warn them, but an admin did the actual blocking. Natalie 18:28, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings from Colorado

Hello, Nyttend. I attend Springs Reformed Church in Colorado Springs. I'm actually not a member of the church, but I have been attending for about seven months. What are you studying at Geneva?—Emote Talk Page 21:42, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do recall the Covenant Heights Conference in July. (Our church auditorium was rather empty on that particular Sunday.) I hope you enjoyed your visit to our beautiful state. If you ever come back, we should get together … we can sit down to a game of chess and chat about history. I see that you're an advocate of "book digitization." My dad started an electronic publishing company[2] about ten years ago, so I'm pretty heavily involved in that also. What do you plan to do with your history degree? Do you hope to teach someday?—Emote Talk Page 23:04, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Arkansas River

I noticed you added a picture showing the trees between Dodge City and Garden City. You should be aware that even though the riverbed there is now dry, many of the trees in the area in the Dodge City area along the riverbank for a stretch of several miles were actually killed roughly 15 years by a farmer who sprayed them with herbicide from a cropduster and was I believe subsequently convicted of a crime for having done so. I don't have any link proof for this at the moment, but I've heard this from area residents. --nonbonumest

Hey, Nathaniel, if you have free time check out here, my first article in about a year and a half! Thanks for the thought. Sorry, I didn't sign, the past couple days my mom restricted my internet use and I've been very busy with band/choir contests and the school musical, which I have a main part in! I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Gambia at the Olympics, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. A tag has been placed on Hermitage Township, Pennsylvania, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Does not exist - please see Mercer County, Pennsylvania talk page Ruhrfisch 04:32, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Ruhrfisch 04:34, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We'd actually love to have you at WikiProject Calvinism on the basis you suggested, of consolidation. Of course, if it's really your code way of saying "I'm not interested/don't have time at the moment", that's fine; I'm much the same myself :). Your userpage mentions article categorisation; if you have a look at the Calvinism Project webpage, that's one of the things on the todo list. Feel free to pitch in if you want.
Sure, I don't mind; just thought I'd make sure you don't think you're unwelcome :). -- TimNelson 12:55, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from Tim Nelson

Hi. I looked at your user page, and, even though it didn't have your name on it, my first guess was that you're Nathaniel Pockras. Am I right?

(Btw, I only discovered the RP Userbox on your page; now it's on mine too :).

-- TimNelson 12:05, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've basically gone: RP from Belle Centre; well, I only know two Pockrases from there. Then when I saw the Old English, I went "Hmm, I doubt there are too many other RPs in Belle Centre with that interest" (which either Allen or Zachery Blackwood mentioned to me), hence the guess.
And yes, I can read just enough OE to make out what your userbox says; I'm not sure of all the words, but enough :). -- TimNelson 12:59, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. Good point; I'll see if I can't replace this with a direct quote from the document referenced

Ohio County Infoboxes

Thanks for adding some Ohio County Infoboxes - I am slowly adding some too. FYI, the German Wikipedia articles all have the day, month and year founded for Ohio counties in their infoboxes (although Logan doesn't agree, German has 30 December 1817, English has 1818). Ruhrfisch 04:15, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why don't you consider Franklin Township, Ohio Defunct?

The land that was formerly Franklin Township has been Incorporated/ Urbanized or annexed by Barberton, Norton, Clinton and, New Franklin. which Merged with the formerly unincorporated Franklin Township last year. Am I wrong? Captainkang 04:37, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I don't know, but I see nothing to suggest such a move. The township website gives no indications (instead, it speaks of the government that a defunct township doesn't have!), and there's nothing on the county website that I saw either. If you have a source for this, provide it, but all that I see suggests that it's still a civil township. Nyttend 05:06, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I completely misunderstood this question — I thought you meant Franklin Township of Franklin County, which I had just added to the list of Franklin Townships when you left this comment. No wonder I couldn't find any evidence of such an annexation! Thanks! Nyttend 18:25, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Steelites

Hi. I noticed your addition of the Steelites to the list of RP churches. I moved them from there to the new Disambiguation section, because they explicitly reject being part of the RP church (also, the others mentioned all recognise each other, but not the Steelites).

Good idea having them listed, though.

Enjoy,

-- TimNelson 04:51, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, they certainly claim not to be associated with us anyway :). In a similar fashion, we (or the early RPs, anyway), claimed that we were the only true Presbyterian Church of Scotland, and the church calling itself that was actually illegitimate. But in order to avoid confusion, we took the "Reformed Presbyterian" name. I think that what the Steelites really care about in this is that they be identified as the true descendants of the Covenanters (I could be wrong, though).
The real question, I guess, is "What are we documenting on the page called Reformed Presbyterian Church?" I can see 3 options:
  • Anyone who calls themselves Reformed Presbyterian: This means the page should be moved to "List of Reformed Presbyterian Churches", and have all the doctrinal stuff removed. Additionally, that sort of list probably isn't anything we want in Wikipedia except as a disambiguation page. So we could turn the whole thing into a disambiguation page.
  • Anyone who calls themselves Reformed Presbyterian and is descended from the Covenanters: Problem; you'll note that the disambig section lists maybe 5 other groups calling themselves RPs. Now 2 or 3 of these are defunct, but the rest are descended from Covenanters. Again we may have to remove some of the doctrinal positions stuff, and I think we'd be better trying to construct a larger article about "splits in the Scottish Presbyterian Church and descended churches" which documents all this sort of thing.
  • Those churches that are part of the mutually-recognising worldwide Reformed Presbyterian Church, of common descent: This is the one I'm arguing for, and the one I've been modifying the page to reflect.
Anyway, now you know what I think. If you think I've misidentified the issue (ie. "What are we documenting?"), or selected the wrong option as to what we're documenting, I'm interested in talking about it further, either on our talk pages, or on Talk:Reformed Presbyterian Church.
-- TimNelson 13:22, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mind if I move theo whole conversation to the Talk:Reformed Presbyterian Church? Mostly from the point of view that I want to archive this for future reference of anyone else on the page.
Hmm. If you examine the link to the Reformed Presbyterian Church General Assembly (that I just corrected) and to Reformed Presbyterian Church (Hanover), you'll find that there are some differences. And what do we do when we start talking about Singapore and Uganda?
Now, the question still is, to my mind, what are we documenting?
Or, to put it a different way, what criteria are we using for including people on this page. The criteria I'm suggesting are:
  • Descended from a common root (Covenanters)
  • Mutually-recognising
Do you disagree with either of those?
Hopefully we'll end up with a better article when this is all done, anyway. Oh, and I agree that the Steelites definitely need to be somewhere, but the criteria in my head still say it belongs in disambig :).
-- TimNelson 14:04, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I've moved it all to the Talk:Reformed Presbyterian Church page. The only change I made to your comments was to change the indenting. Feel free to remove stuff from here, although you might want to keep a cross-reference link.

Interesting (Blue Banner)

Hi. I thought that you would be interested in the discussion at Image talk:Sc7588935 TN.jpg.

-- TimNelson 12:50, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As you stated it, no. As you meant it, maybe. I don't think copyright applies here, but some other form of Intellectual Monopoly might.

  • Hopefully we can both agree that neither patents nor trade secrets are relevant
  • I would argue that copyright is not relevant, as I drew the design myself based on a book printed in 18-something (before 1923 anyway)
  • Trademarks/trade dress: This may be relevant. I'd argue, though, that as it's not being used exclusively by the RPCNA (or the RPC denominational group), but by the Steelites as well, that this doesn't apply either. In fact, the one the Steelites use as the blue background on http://www.covenanter.org/ was produced by me for (an older version of) the RPCA website using an outline that is probably identical to the one in the RPCNA banner that appears here on Wikipedia. You'll notice that that outline (and all the ones the RPC tends to use) have 3 spikes at the bottom, whereas the one I drew from the old book has a fringe at the bottom. Therefore the RPCNA one is more similar to the Steelite one than the one that I drew. I'm still unsure where this leaves us legally, but my guess is that we're alright. But assuming we're not, I could probably replace it with one scanned directly from the old book, which should almost certainly be alright.

Hmm :).

-- TimNelson 09:32, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, as the RPCNA banner is pretty much identical to the one used on the Witness (both RPCNA and RPCI), it might be possible to argue copyright on that particular depiction of the blue banner. Or you might be able to call it a trademark in a similar fashion (in spite of its long history). However, if either of those are true, they should be battling the Steelites in order to retain control, otherwise it will become "generic" (or something -- I forget the proper term), and they'll lose the rights -- in other words, fight the little battles, and when the big one comes, it will be little too, because you'll have precedent.
OTOH, the Steelites could try to get it from us as per the Ferguson Bequest case :).
Basically, what I'm arguing is that the RPCNA banner is a much more borderline case than my picture :). And now I've argued both sides :).

afro photo

go on and upload the afro photo, its great!

71.112.6.35 15:11, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not that whites can't have afros, Nyttend, it's that the photos typically illustrate the article. The IP above is absolutely obsessed with me, so they aren't giving particularly good advice to you (every time they log on they do things that relate only to me...it's kind of flattering. But they also use the IP 71.112.7.212 with a lengthy history of contentiousness and being blocked - best to ignore them). Regardless, if you want to write a section about white afros, then try it out and maybe then the photo will work. But right now the article mainly relates to afros as a black hairstyle and Jewfro as it relates to Jews. If the person is Jewish, then it would work really well! --David Shankbone 15:40, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

nyttend, feel free to put your photo up. it's a great pic. mr "bone" above has put another photo there that's he's very protective of, he also seems to think afros only count if the person wearing them is jewish. how crazy is that?! i can help you upload it if you need.

  • Thanks for the note. I like your picture, though - it made me laugh and was good quality. Yeah, I'm not sure what this IP's deal is; I guess she just has a lot of time on her hands and can't seem to get me out of her head. I think there might be some kind of physical and intellectual attraction on her part, and she wants negative attention. Every time she signs on, she tries to get my attention. Poor old girl...must be lonely and bored. You do some great work on here, by the way - I checked out your contributions. Thanks for contributing! --David Shankbone 04:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hey man, no skin off my back if you don't want to upload. i thought you wanted to put it up. 2-1 for might not be the best consensus, but surely its better than 1-2? isn't it strange that it is OK to put a photo up of a jewish person with an afro but if your friend isn't jewish then it it will be stricken? we're talking hairstyles here, not religion of who's wearing them. anyhow, don't be suspicious of IPs. IPs are people too! ;) you might take a look at the current photo on the afro page, i think you'll agree it ain't an afro....not compared to your friends. then again, if you mess with that page this shankbone fellow is going to go out of his way to make you miserable, so maybe its best left alone. 71.112.6.35 04:31, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hey man, don't really know what your game is, but you were a bit impolite there. i came here to support putting your picture up. i'm sorry if shankbone intimidated you into not putting up your photo because your friend isn't jewish or whatever reason he's using for keeping his photo up there these days, but don't see why you're taking it out and me.

Nyttend, Thank you for calling my username to my attention, and I have already taken action. I do not want to cause any avoidable confusion. I would like to briefly comment on your merging of Mayfield Township with Defunct Townships. The Mayfield Township article was made for the sole purpose of the defunct township, and in hopes for further expansion. None of the information from the Mayfield Township article was carried over into the new article, which was all relevant, and met encyclopedic criteria. Also, this "merge" was done without any discussion. I would like again to thank you for your help, and I understand that your decisions were made in good faith, like a Wikipedian should. CSS and HTML markup

Well, they're only really essential if you create websites for a living! But they can be useful when using Wikipedia, particularly when styling tables and infoboxes, for example. I've got a few minutes to see if I can get your user page sorted out, so I'll have go now. That's easier than explaining CSS and HTML markup. Largest city question

Hi Nyttend, I went through and updated all the Ohio county infoboxes recently (added dates, etc. and two sources). In the process I only filled in the largest city field if it was a city other than the county seat. For Greene County I listed Kettering, even though it is in both Montgomery and Greene Counties, as it had the largest population, even though it is mostly in Montgomery Co. (Beavercreek is the biggest city entirely in Greene Co.). An anon editor recently changed the Greene Co. infobox (note the charming edit summary) [3]. Anyway, my question to you is what do you think should be done about largest city? In most cases it is the county seat, so it seems redundant to me to list that twice. At this point I want it to be consistent for all 88 counties, but otherwise don't care too much. Since you seem to be one of the only other people systmatically working on Ohio counties, I wanted your opinion. Thanks, Ruhrfisch 14:43, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I fixed Greene County - the anon took out the equal sign so largest city was not showing up (though Beavercreek was listed in the code). I can see one of two plans: 1) We can ask User:Timneu22 who has been working on the county infoboxes about a "county seat and largest city" line to the template. 2) It might be easier if I just made another pass through and added largest city (already checked them all the last pass). I don't recall too many other counties where the largest city was in multiple counties.

Sorry about Hermitage Township - you can ask an admin to undelete it and paste the info in your talk page or sandbox to recreate the article. I think there is also an undelete appeal process, but forget what it is called. There are a few paper township articles in Pennsylvania (see Augusta Township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania for one I recall), so it seems notable and should be (re)created. I guess I should have used {{prod}} and not {{db}} - sorry again. Take care, Ruhrfisch 18:51, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Largest village

Agreed. I tried it ("Largest village" in the template instead of "Largest city") for Vinton County (diff [4]) and it didn't work. I will ask User:Timneu22 to add the parameter. Largest borough would be useful for Pennsylvania. I might also tell him about not double linking the largest city of it is the same as the seat. I finished my pass through all 88 Ohio counties. My last pass I checked populations, but it is still possible I missed a largest X or two, so if you have any you want to check please do so. Thanks, Ruhrfisch 14:49, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not vandalizing

How is correcting misinformation wrong. The Eastwood Mall is the biggest Mall in America, then The King of Prussia, then Mall of America. Not that California mall. Just read this article. [5]appropriatusername

Wow. I did not realize Eastwood Mall is now the biggest mall in America, and I'm from that area! In fact, that same mall is the one I would frequent as a teen. I really need to go back home more often... (No point to this commentary, just some random sharing on a wikifriend's page.) -- SwissCelt 16:01, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Southington, Oh

I'm from Southington and all though Clint Elston is only a local celebrity, Chad Petty, a former classmate of mine, was drafted to the Detroit Tigers and traded to Milwaukee Brewers and is currently a free agent. County templates (AZ)

Hello, I saw the question you posted up on the Arizona wikiproject regarding county navigational templates in Arizona. I took a look at the ones you made for Yuma and Santa Cruz counties, and I believe they look pretty good. I should point out though that the distinction between a city and a town is fairly marginal and largely historical. The governmental structure of a city is generally more complex than that of a town, but in terms of powers and responsibilities they are functionally identical. Additionally the idea that cities are larger than towns is also largely historical. For example, El Mirage is a city at 22,121 population whereas Gilbert is a town with 173,989 residents. Since the differences between city and town are negligible and largely of historic value only here in Arizona, I'd suggest putting them together (cities/towns) in your templates rather than splitting them up.

You might also want to take in to consideration that there exists some precedent for grouping by population size as well. See, for example, Template:Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Personally I don't like this format - city populations, particularly here in Arizona, tend to grow rapidly and are not good for groupings. I prefer the grouping by city/town or CDP, as you have done, but just figured you might want to take that under consideration. Arkyan • (talk) 18:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Phoenix template I provided is somewhat ambiguous in terms of what it includes. It seems to include all of the municipalities in Maricopa and Pinal counties, as well as some (but not all) of the CDP's. There is some contention as to how to define the Phoenix Metro Area - whether it is a firm definition from the Census bureau, or based on a more intuitive "what locals consider to be the metro area". Personally I favor using the Census bureau's definition if only for the sake of attribution, butI have yielded to the consensus on this issue :) Anyway hope i've answered your questions. Arkyan • (talk) 19:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done! I added my thoughts to the proposed move. Arkyan • (talk) 23:03, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent job with the county templates. Good work! I wonder if it's possible (and if this is too much work then don't worry about it) to give the templates a hide/show feature? I know it's an extreme example but Apache Junction, Arizona has a listing in 3 distinct templates and having so many clustered up at the bottom seems to clutter the page some, and the ability to hide the templates might help cure that. But only if it's not too much work :) Again, great job and thanks! Arkyan • (talk) 06:31, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bellefontaine's GAC

Hey there. I thought I should tip you off on why I nominated Bellefontaine, Ohio for Good Article status. User:Epbr123 assessed the article as "start class", which is the lowest possible assessment for an article that's not a stub. This editor also did so without leaving any comments, which essentially degrades the article-- how can we improve it if we don't know what to improve? I don't like assessments anyway, but assessments without comments just leave a black mark on the article and devalue the contributions of tireless editors.

So I tried removing the quality part of the assessment for now. He/she reverted my edits twice. Finally, I nominated the article for GA status in the hopes of bringing the quality scale up. It was a desperation move, as I could think of no other way to keep the article from forever being a start class article. This SAME editor failed the GAC, mere minutes after I nominated it. So now not only does the article have an ugly "start class" rating, it has an even uglier failed GA status on it. I'm fed up. I feel as though the article was vandalized by a drive-by editor, and I don't feel that I have any recourses to correct it. -- SwissCelt 13:10, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aha, I see what you mean. I saw that bit and simply assumed that someone had nominated it for GA and quickly been turned down, with nothing else happening. Nyttend 13:13, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So what can we do about it? I'm in a cooling off period right now (self-imposed), so I won't do anything today, but I would very much appreciate your advice. -- SwissCelt 13:17, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not much of an idea. I usually don't do anything with this kind of ratings (too subjective for me), and my input was just a guess. I suppose the intro could be expanded, and the geography and economy as well. Do you get the Examiner's online edition? There's not that much of economy notes in the Examiner generally. Nyttend 13:20, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know the article can be improved, certainly. Hmmm... Maybe I'm just worried too much about it. The whole process just upsets me, as it seems to be an easy way to snipe at other people's work without adding anything constructive. -- SwissCelt 13:32, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
One thing that could help the geography section is a picture and account of Campbell Hill (regardless of whether it comes with an ", Ohio" :-). I hope to go to get a picture sometime this summer.
At any rate, look at other cities. Articles as significant as Carson City, Nevada and Biloxi, Mississippi are rated start-class. Perhaps the cities Wikiproject is just really stringent. Nyttend 13:37, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nyttend, I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, and I know the external links often need pruning, but I think you're perhaps being over-zealous.

But thanks for the Arizona county template stuff, which is nice and genuinely useful. As for Big Park/VOC, we may have to agree to disagree <grin>. Cheers, Pete Tillman 01:46, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Scioto County

Yeah I've been meaning to take some pictures of Scioto County recently. But have never got the time to do it. Hopefully I can do it this summer before going off to Ohio State in the fall. I also need to refer to some articles in Scioto County. We sort have troubles with political corruption in these parts of my county and needs to be looked at instead of being censored or edited by pessimists. Surely Jimmy can come into the KYOVA region. Your information added to all the townships looks great. Spongefan 20:34, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You messed up the calendars

When you moved the first day of the week in Template:MonthR, you messed up a lot of calendars (such as Common year starting on Monday). Did you realise this?

Kansas images

As to the ... tons of places with no pictures ...
I live on the Kansas side of KC, the east side of the state ... west side of the city. The origins of humanity is just a history topic to me.
I would be willing to take pictures of various places. Where? What?
I like geography and places too .. I had done the Grinter Place ...
For Kansas counties, I'd do it ... as long as they are not too far away — gas is high and the oil addiction sucks ...
Again ... I'll try to find some that need it ... but ...
Where? What? Tell me ...

Marysville, Kansas and Black Squirrels

On your edit for Marysville, Kansas I do believe that you are right to move the History section, but I question why the section on "black squirrels" was removed. Other cities and towns in Wikipedia have "town nicknames" listed if there is one, and I don't see why Marysville would be the exception to that.

Please explain.--Paul McDonald 02:05, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yavapai County, Arizona template

You may want to add these towns and places to your template:

Clemenceau, Arizona (new page), old company town, now part of Cottonwood, Arizona

Rimrock, Arizona (where I live) and McGuireville, Arizona -- unincorporated towns/places in the Lake Montezuma, Arizona CDP

Page Springs, Arizona, uninc. community in the Cornville, Arizona CDP

Cherry, Arizona (new page), ghost town

Cheers, Pete Tillman 08:05, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply (at User talk:Tillman). That all sounds reasonable, especially since old mining towns out West typically had/have many named communities/areas.
Sorry for the confusion re town naming conventions. Cheers, Pete Tillman 18:41, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geauga County

I hope you don't mind me asking, but why are you reorganizing the town articles in that way. Many of the sections that you are shortening have incorrect grammar, and if you look at other town articles, you will see that the demographic sections are supposed to be there and in that form. Also, some of your information is incorrect, such as the fact that Bainbridge, Ohio is located inside of Bainbridge Township. They are completely separate places. 71.31.149.98 03:23, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to revert your changes, or at least add the demographic sections back, for now. 71.31.149.98 03:24, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'm going to leave most of your changes intact. However, unless there's a good reason for it, I think that stating that a place is the only town/township/etc. with that name in the state is a bit redundant. 71.31.149.98 03:38, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the midunderstanding. I didn't realize that the township articles were different from census-designated areas. 69.40.245.190 02:45, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The link to the Volapük Vükiped that you've restored points to Sterling, Utah, not to Sterling, Ohio. There is currently no article on Sterling, Ohio, in the Volapük Vükiped. I still need to find time to look at Ohio townships and write Volapük articles for them; that will take quite a while, given my current schedule. In the interest of consistency, I've removed the link again. Please don't restore it, you'd be restoring a wrong link. --Smeira 18:07, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, it happens. (The other day I was copying information from an article on a small town in Utah to the Volapük Wikipedia to translate, and by mistake I saved my translation onto the English article (I had both open in parallel windows, they had the same maps...). One and a half minute later another Wikipedian reverted the change and thought I was doing vandalism. I apologized, sighed and went on.) --Smeira 08:49, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On the Enterprise, Kansas page you removed the trivia section. Just curious... what's the reason??--Paul McDonald 03:29, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm assuming all the same regions as before would be viable, but you might want to double-check... Alai 02:29, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, that's what I was suggesting; sorry if I was unclear. I was just listing the by-county numbers for (relative) ease of reference in checking the regions would be viable (i.e., all over 60 articles). However, I would suggest by-county templates, since experience tells us that there's no end to how much this stuff will grow, and because the regions are somewhat vague and mutable, while the counties are much less so. Alai 03:43, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hardly a lot rarer; there's nearly 800 Ohio-school-stubs now, which more than there were Ohio-geo-stubs until very recently. `And as the above numbers illustrate, some of the individual counties are well on the way to the threshold by themselves. And I'm afraid I don't see the downside to the model I suggested. Alai 04:12, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's a good general principle that admittedly does start to seem a little silly in its application in the extreme case, if say Morgan County really only does have one school stub, but for the sake of symmetry it's probably best to create them all on the same pattern, with template scopes corresponding to the permcats. BTW, I think this earlier proposal pretty much covers the formalities. I'll make a start tomorrow if I get the chance. Alai 04:32, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When using certain templates on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:uw-test1}} instead of {{uw-test1}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Thank you. lacking in tact...

The treatment of Cstanfie and the Jay S. Thomas article is panning out to be the most niggardly display of wiki editorial abuse and harassment that I have ever witnessed. Regardless of the issues of religious and racial discrimination, this is turning into a calculated and craven effort to stifle individuals, not simply what you consider to be arbitrarily lacking. The personal attacks need to stop and the harassment of Cstanfie and his associates must desist, pending previously stated ramifications. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rellis0415 (talkcontribs) 12:36, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, this was a project that I started earlier this year (see the list here Wikipedia:WikiProject Illinois/Townships). I got away from it to do some other things, cleaning up and whatnot. I simply need to finish off these 27 county townships, and well almost all the precincts. Maybe I can convince you too come help us out real quick here in Illinois! haha --Kranar drogin 04:12, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Naw, I will just keep plugging away here. With the geobox, it isn't that bad to do, just gets boring after awhile. But I figure, once I get it done, it will be done. One thing I noticed when I did take a quick glance at a few of your townships is that you don't have the Ohio wiki project on the talk page. You may want to add that in your articles, but that is up to your project. Luckily, I have my template I use for each county copied on word, then I just copy and paste, and change out the few things that need changing, ie founding date, coords, pop, etc. Thanks for the comments though, I do appreciate it.--Kranar drogin 13:10, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
