This page lists automobile engines that Volkswagen has used and are now discontinued. Since Volkswagen is European, most of the ratings are in metric horsepower or Pferdestärke (PS, 735.5 watts). The metric power in kW is the reference in case of conflict. The engines currently used are in the list of Volkswagen engines.


Petrol engines

Air Cooled

The Volkswagen air cooled engine was introduced in 1936 in Germany, produced in factories all over the world, and the last complete engine was produced in 2006 in Brazil. Its air cooled, 4 cylinder, boxer configuration was unique in it's day for a production automobile, but has gone on to power millions of vehicles around the world.

EA111

The EA111 series was introduced in the mid 1970s in the Audi 50 and later the VW Polo. It is a series of water cooled three- and four-cylinder petrol and Diesel engines in a variety of sizes. The overhead cam engine features a crossflow cylinder head design and directly-driven auxiliary units. The exhaust manifold is in driving direction.

  • The EA827 family was introduced in 1974 for Audi and VW. It's a water cooled very robust engine configuration for 4- up to 8- cylinders and is still build this time. The “827” is also the base for diesel engines. It shares 88 mm cylinder spacing
