The University of Groningen (RUG) was founded in 1614 (One of the oldest in Europe). With over 20,000 students, the RUG is one of the largest universities in the Netherlands and is divided in 10 faculties. With more than 5,000 members of staff, the RUG is one of the largest employers in the north of the Netherlands. The large number of students reduces the average age of the Groningen population; partly for this reason the city has a lively, dynamic character.
