Daniel Ernest Tanner (born 1957) is a character on the TV series Full House, portrayed by Bob Saget.

Biography

Danny is the widowed father of DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle. He is left to take care of his three daughters after wife Pam's tragic death. The very conservatively dressed Danny seems out of place in San Francisco. In the show, it's suspected that he moved out to San Francisco after his parents divorced, as in the episode "Terror in Tanner Town", he mentions living through the divorce of his parents when he was about the age of Rusty, the mischievous son of a woman (Cindy) he liked.

Danny had several girlfriends on the show, the closest being Vicky Larson, whom he met while she was filling in for Rebecca Donaldson on the talk show Danny and Rebecca co-starred in, "Wake Up, San Francisco". This happened when Rebecca was out on maternity leave. When Rebecca returned, Vicky took a job in Chicago, and as a result, a long distance relationship between Vicky and Danny began. Eventually, Vicky and Danny got engaged after Danny proposed to her during the fireworks display during the family's trip to Walt Disney World. However, they broke up in mid-season seven ("The Perfect Couple") after Vicky took a job in New York. Vicky and Danny never saw or spoke to each other again.

Throughout the entire lifespan of the show, Danny is continuously obsessed with two things: cleanliness and group hugs. He is said to be a "Lean, Mean, Cleaning (sometimes "hugging") Machine". This leads to the distinct possibility that several character traits are heightened because of lingering depression over his wife's death. While he mentions a love of cleaning existing from when he was little, because he wanted to be like his mom (Doris Roberts as Claire Tanner), he is much more obsessed with it in later episodes than he likely ever was before Pam's death. He is even shown using a mini vacuum on his larger one, and scrubbing his cleaning products. Likewise, he was reluctant to discipline Michelle, perhaps because Michelle never knew a mother, and possibly not having Pam there to discuss how to handle things. As a result of not being able to cope with the emotional stress associated with his wife's death, Danny has been known on occasion to over indulge on alcohol. While not a predominate theme on the show, it has surfaced several times (like in the episode "Just Say No Way") as a passing theme.

In the episode, "The Not So Perfect Couple", Danny reveals on a game show that his worst nightmare is being in a crowded health spa and standing naked on a stairmaster while eating a cheese log.

Danny owned a red convertible he calls "Bullet". Bullet was a gift from Pam to Danny on his 20th birthday. When Jesse accidentally drove the car into the San Francisco Bay on Danny's 30th birthday, it is replaced by a car (which he named "Walter") that looks identical to his previous car. Despite this, he is seen driving a Ford Taurus in many episodes. Danny is also the only character of the original six, to not ever use a catch phrase throughout the series.

Pop Culture

Danny Tanner's character has spawned several devotee followings, including the popular website Bob Saget is God [1] as well as bands Danny Tanner's Rainbow Militia and Danny Tanner.[2]
