"Gary's Desk"

"Gary's Desk" is the 8th episode of the 4th season of the HBO television series Entourage.

Plot

With the guys' current housing situation confining them much more, it has made it difficult for E to read offers, and to get in contact with Peter Jackson, whose video game company Vince would like to work with. To remedy this, he rents an office suite so he can read offers for Vince and answer the phone. However, the guys are appalled to see E is using a card table for a desk, so they set out to find one that is much nicer. Meanwhile, Ari is at the office, preparing for his annual meeting with client Mary J. Blige. He is hyping it to the other employees, who are ready, except for the Jensen twins, Jim and Jeff. They are both furious at each other, claiming the other needs to be fired, although neither says why.

At an antiques store, Vince, Drama, and Turtle spot a desk with a rich Hollywood past, first appearing in Breakfast at Tiffany's as Mickey Rooney's desk and later given as a gift by Martin Scorsese to Robert De Niro after New York, New York failed at the box office. Immediately Vince, Drama and Turle say they'll take it, only to hear it was already sold to Gary Busey. Having had numerous conflicts in the past, the guys set out to his house to make an offer to buy it off of him.

At the office, E calls Variety, asking to take out an ad for his new company, called "The Murphy Group" (despite E being the only employee). Wanting it to say he represents Vincent Chase, E once again hears the usual response, "Ari Gold represents Vincent Chase", prompting E to hang up. He later gets a call from Shauna, who tells him of a rep she knows at the paper who will do a write-up on him. As for the rest of the friends, they arrive at Busey's house, who agrees to let them have the desk, provided he can paint on Drama for his next art project.

At Ari's office, the conflict between the twins reaches a breaking point when they begin to fight in the conference room as the Blige meeting nears. He puts them in his office, and learns that Jeff had sex with Jim's wife. Ari determines they can't work together, and though visibly disgusted at Jeff, he fires Jim because Jeff has out-earned him. The meeting follows, with Mary J. disappointed Ari had to fire Jim, one of her favorite agents. This situation only gets worse when they run into him on the elevator, and he quickly explains what happened. Mary J. leaves, disgusted with Ari. Knowing she's left for rival agency ICM, Ari is further enraged, and fires Jeff as well.

After the boys leave Busey's house, they arrange for the desk to be delivered to E's office, only to see they can't because it won't fit up the stairs or in the elevator. The news only gets worse when they find E a headline on the new Variety, in a story titled "The new nepotism in Hollywood". With E dejected, Vince cheers him up by renting a new, much larger office for him, as well as adjacent offices for Vince, Drama, and Turtle. The episode concludes with a call from Peter Jackson, who tells E to never mind the bad press and he'd be happy to work with Vince, asking E "for his assistant to call my assistant", and E informs them he'll now have to hire someone.

Guest cast

Reception

Paul Katz of Entertainment Weekly felt that Gary Busey brought some "much needed color" back to the show. Katz felt that celebrity cameos are sometimes good (Seth Green) and sometimes bad (Mandy Moore), but that Busey should be used every week.[1] Jonathan Toomey of TV Squad felt Gary's Desk had a lot character devolopment, with Eric trying to "go legit" and finding it difficult. He also felt that Gary Busey is arguably the best best guest star Entourage has ever had.[2] Janaki Cedanna of TVFodder.com felt that this "filler" episode moved the story arc along well. He also felt that the "bunny sex" was hard to beat.[3] A Hollywood.com Staff writer felt that Peter Jackson may be this season's James Cameron.[4]Ahsan Haque of IGN.com gave this episode an 8 out of 10.[5]

Trivia

  • This episode was Shauna's (Debi Mazar) first appearance in the fourth season.[1]
