Kalahari Meerkat Project

The Kalahari Meerkat Project, or KMP, is a long term research project on meerkats, to study cooperative behavior among meerkats.

History

The project was founded in the early nineties by researchers at Cambridge University. It was originally based on the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, but in 1993 moved to the Kuruman River Reserve at 26°59′53″S 21°47′35″E / 26.99806°S 21.79306°E / -26.99806; 21.79306.

Series one of the television series Meerkat Manor was first aired in 2005. It follows the daily activities of the Whiskers and Starsky groups.

Map of territories

At this link is a map of the Kalahari Meerkat Project's meerkat mobs, including the size (a, in km²) and perimeter (p, in km) of each territory, as of 2004. Blank areas between the marked territories are not monitored by the Kalahari Meerkat Project, i.e. they do not carry habituated meerkats.

Only minor territory shifts have occurred since this map was made until 2006. Most notable was the foundation of Commandos in 2005—who have taken territory of Whiskers, Young Ones, and Elveera—placing the Commandos mob at the intersection of these three territories.

Friends of the Kalahari Meerkat Group

A new website created by the Kalahari Meerkat Group staff is updated regulary with new information. It includes a list of all meerkats in the research area, group dominant female and male list, group explanation, and much more. Most of the info on the Kalahari Meerkat Project has been moved to this new website.[1]

Meerkat groups

Currently, all meerkat groups featured in the study are based on the Kuruman River Reserve. The following is a list of all meerkat groups in the study, listed by the time they were founded.

Drie Doring

The Drie Doring Mob was founded in 1993, and is the oldest surviving mob on the project. There are 11 members. These are the known meerkats in the Drie Doring mob.

  • Mabili, one of the first dominant females in the group. She was the oldest meerkat on the project. She was dominant from 1995 to 2005, ending with her death.
  • Makonkie, Mabili's daughter and the new dominant female.
  • Osprey, the dominant male. He came from the Lazuli. He recently died.
  • Piripicchio, the new dominant male after Osprey recently died.
  • Clarabella, a female and littermate to Piripicchio and Ciancica.
  • Molly Bloom, a female and littermate to Dark Rosaleen, Finn MacCool, and The Pooka McPhelimy.
  • Dark Rosaleen, a female and littermate to Molly Bloom, Finn MacCool, and The Pooka McPhelimy.
  • Mist, a female and littermate to Loki and Thor.
  • Ciancica, a male and littermate to Piripicchio and Clarabella.
  • Finn MacCool, a male and littermate to Molly Bloom, Dark Rosaleen, and The Pooka McPhelimy.
  • The Pooka McPhelimy, a male and littermate to Molly Bloom, Dark Rosaleen, and Finn MacCool.

Lazuli

The Lazuli were founded in 1995, by Lazuli, a female from the Avatar group. It has 24 members.

  • Lazuli, the founder of the Lazuli, and the first dominant female.
  • Ziziphus, Lazuli's sister, who came from the Young Ones and took dominance from her sister.
  • Cazanna, the daughter of Ziziphus, and former dominant female. She recently died of tuberculosis.
  • Basil, the former dominant male. In the popular show Meerkat Manor, he is known as Big Si. He died of tuberculosis before his partner Cazanna.
  • Padloper, Basil and Cazanna's son. After JD left the Lazuli, he became the dominant male.
  • Phia, Franny, Lallie and Mungojerry, subordinates.
  • Aretha, the new dominant female. She is related to Padloper, so they can't mate.
  • Diana, a female and littermate to Mungojerry and Bonzo.
  • Bonzo, a female and littermate to Mungojerry and Diana.
  • Zooey, a female and littermate to Franny and J. Alfred Prufrock.
  • HP, a female and littermate to Young.
  • Young, a female and littermate to HP.
  • Flax, a female and littermate to Lallie, Landie, Caroline, Bernard, Teaser, and Shaka Zulu.
  • Landie, a female and littermate to Flax, Lallie, Caroline, Bernard, Teaser, and Shaka Zulu.

  • Papillon, a female and the youngest member of the group.

Young Ones

The Young Ones is a group founded by Morgause and Ziziphus, in 1995. It has 9 members.

  • Asterix, the grand-daughter of Morgause, and the dominant female.
  • Alexander, the dominant male. He came from the Vivian group, and is a half brother to Zaphod and Youssarian of the Whiskers gang.
  • Aurinko, a male. Perhaps the son of Asterix and Alexander. He is not alive anymore.
  • Maya, a female and the sister of Asterix. She had killed the pups of the dominant female, and has been evicted before.
  • Teabag and Biltong, two subordinate males.
  • Tequila, a subordinate female who successully did the impossible - got into a another group.
  • Lotte, a subordinate female who gave birth recently, but her pups died.
  • Foxymoron, a female and littermate to Scrutny Gippo.
  • Scrutny Gippo, a female and littermate to Foxymoron.
  • Douglas, a male and littermate to Jim Bob.
  • Philippe, a male and littermate to Home Star Runner.
  • Home Star Runner, a male and littermate to Philippe.

Vivian

The Vivian is a group founded in 1995, by Vivian. It has 14 members.

  • Vivian, the founder of the group. She died in 2000.
  • Stinker, a partner of Vivian. He is no longer in the Vivian.
  • Jim Bob, the new dominant male of the Vivian. He comes from the Young Ones. In the popular show Meerkat Manor, he is known as "Hannibal." He recently died.
  • Rhian, a daughter of Vivian, and the new dominant female. In the popular show Meerkat Manor, she is known as "Nikita."
  • Cyrano, the short-lived dominant male. He disappeared.
  • Asriel, a female.
  • Marjorie Dawes, a female and littermate to Daffyd and Emily Howard.
  • Odysseus, a female and littermate to Icarus, Calypso, Aphrodite, and Hercules.

The Elveera is a group started in 1996 as a split-off of the Phantoms, now recognized as a new mob. It has 15 members.

  • Eleusine, the second dominant female. She was killed in 2006 by a Cape Cobra.
  • Dante, Eleusine's partner.
  • Jo Jo Hello, Eleusine's daughter and the new dominant female.
  • Habusu, the new dominant male. He came from the Young Ones.
  • George, a female.
  • Chocolatine, a female.
  • Lambert, a female and littermate to Parker and Ash.

  • Kangela, a female and littermate to Chibuku Scud and Gijima.

Whiskers

The Whiskers are the largest group, with 33 members. They are also the best known, as they are the featured group in Meerkat Manor.

  • Delpheus, a male founder of the Whiskers. Orginally from the Lazuli.
  • Argon, a male founder of the Whiskers. Orginally from the Lazuli.
  • Flower, the dominant female until February 2007, when she was killed by a Cape Cobra.
  • Zaphod, the dominant male. He recently took back his dominance after stepping down.
  • Yossarian, the former dominant male. He has mated with the former dominant female of the Lazuli, Cazzana. He is either dead or roved off the study area. He was briefly seen in the PQ mob.
  • Rocket Dog, the new dominant female of the Whiskers.
  • Zarathustra, temporarily the dominant male, until Zaphod took back the position.
  • Flava Flav, the most avid rover of the Whiskers. He is Tosca's grown up pup, from a litter she had before Meerkat Manor, and a littermate to De la Soul.
  • Hawkeye, a female and littermate to Cruise, Logan, and Mitch. On the show Meerkat Manor, she is known as Rocky.
  • Cruise, a female and littermate to Hawkeye, Logan, and Mitch.
  • Tina Sparkle, a female and littermate to Spud. On the show Meerkat Manor, she is known as Sophie.
  • Petra, a female and littermate to Machu Pichu and Ningaloo.
  • Finn, a female and littermate to Flo. On Meerkat Manor, she is known as Parsley.
  • Ella, a female and littermate to Billy, Miles, and Baker. On Meerkat Manor, she is known as Mango.
  • Cheetara, a female and littermate to Wileykat and Panthro. On Meerkat Manor, she is known as Shelley.

The Rascals were formed in the same year as Whiskers, 1998. They have 19 members.

  • Splash, the first dominant female and one of the founders of the group. She was killed by a predator.
  • Kine, Splash's partner and the first dominant male. He was killed by a predator.
  • Yeca, Splash's daughter and the new dominant female. She became dominant at 11 months old, and the group size shrank to 7 during her dominance. She recently died. She was both a mate and a littermate to Spofl.
  • Spofl, a male from the Rascals and Yeca's partner, until she died.
  • Skwodnee, a female and littermate to Blondie, Darg, Fiend, and Fool.
  • Blondie, a female and littermate to Skwodnee, Darg, Fiend, and Fool.
  • Tooey, a female and littermate to Jackson and Jammy B.

The Moomins are a large, peaceful group, with 20 members.

  • Grumpy, A Lazuli female and the current dominant female.
  • Burgan, the dominant male. He came from Drie Doring. He recently died.
  • Moomintroll, one of the oldest Moomin males. He moved out of the group, and was seen as the dominant male of a group outside the Kuruman reserve.
  • Snufkin, the brother of Moomintroll. He has been seen in the same group as Moomintroll.
  • Fluffernutter, a male born without claws or canines, but doing quite well in spite of these handicaps.
  • Toft, Grandpa Grumble, Mymble, Little My, Hemulen, and Ayarbee, subordinates.
  • Misable, a female and littermate to Mymble, Grandpa Grumble, and Toft.
  • Regopstaan, a female and littermate to Dzidzia, Ayarbee, Mungo 3000, and Malpa Hamadryas.

The Gattaca were founded in 2001, by Risca, the former dominant female of Whiskers. It has 8 members.

  • Risca, the dominant female. She is ten years old.
  • Izit was Risca's partner, but died after being taken by a predator. He is a half-brother to Zaphod, the dominant male of Whiskers, and a brother to Alexander, the dominant male of Young Ones. After he died, a succession of males has taken dominancy, but each died of disease, and Daffyd has taken over for now.
  • Stinker, the former dominant male until Izit took dominance. In the popular show Meerkat Manor, he is known as "Sondheim".

Zappa

Zappa was founded in 2001. It has 9 members.

  • Bettik was an Elveera female and the first dominant of this group. She died of disease, with her second partner, Glufs.
  • Mack, the former dominant male. He died of a unknown cause.
  • Lola, the new dominant female. So far she has no partner. Her sister Punk has taken over dominance.
  • Katesa, Dougal, Aristotle, and Milla, subordinates.
  • Punk, Lola's sister. The new dominant female.
  • Shadowflax, the recent dominant male until his disappearance.

Commandos

Commandos were founded in 2004, and is one of the fastest growing groups. It has 24 members.

  • Zorilla, the dominant female who came from Gattaca.
  • Aragorn, the dominant male.
  • Ketamine, the new dominant male after Aragorn died.
  • Mary-Pat, Zorilla's sister. She recently died.
  • Kleintjie, Zorilla's sister. She and Zorilla ganged up on Mary-Pat.

Starsky

The newest group, formed in 2007 from Whisker females and Lazuli and Young Ones males. It has an unknown amount of members.

  • Mozart, the supposed dominant female. She is the eldest surviving daughter of Flower, the former dominant female of the Whiskers.
  • Kinkaju, the supposed dominant female. She may have deposed Mozart.
  • De la Soul, a female. She is a pup of Tosca (an evicted Whiskers female who died in 2005), and was evicted and founded the Starsky with her aunts.
  • JD, a rover from the Lazuli. He was the dominant male, but succumbed to disease and starvation from an infected scar. On Meerkat Manor, JD is known as "Carlos".
  • Shady he is the male from the Young Ones. He first saw a snake on "The Death Of Romance".

Aztecs

This is a new group, formed when Monkulus stole a few adults from the Whiskers. It has 7 members.

  • Monkulus, the dominant female. She is from the Whiskers. On the show Meerkat Manor, she is known as either Sparky or Maybelline.
  • Flo, a female and littermate to Finn. On Meerkat Manor, she is known as Rose.
  • Billy, a female and littermate to Ella, Miles, and Baker. On Meerkat Manor, she is known as Chutney.
  • Bananas, a female and littermate to Butch Cassidy, Alonzo Mourning, and Orinoco. On Meerkat Manor, she is known as Mango.
  • Burdock, a female.
  • Squig, a female. On Meerkat Manor, she is known as Squiggy.
  • Murray, a male, and the only male in the group, although he is too young to be the dominant male.
