The Magnum XL 200 was the first hyper coaster (a roller coaster standing over 200 feet) in the world. The "Magnum", as it is simply called by its numerous fans, was built by Morgan Manufacturing in 1989 at Cedar Point. The first hill on the Magnum is 205 feet tall with a vertical drop drop of 200 feet. The ride reaches a maximum speed of 72 miles per hour (116 kilometers per hour). The Magnum is an example of an out and back roller coaster. The first three hills will take you "out". The ride then performs a high speed pretzel turn-around and races "back" through a series of tunnels and bunny hills. Since it is located at Cedar Point, the Magnum gives riders a view of Lake Erie while it takes you through its almost mile long track. The Magnum often appears on coaster enthusiasts' Top 10 lists.

The Magnum XL 200 is also the target of false rumors claiming that the structure was sinking due to unstable ground, and plans were being started to disassemble the ride and sell it to a Japanese theme park. The rumor supposedly started as an April Fools Day joke which was published in an Ohio newspaper. The rumor quickly spread as a result of the Internet. Cedar Point itself has denounced such rumors.
