Incarnate Word Academy is a Roman Catholic, private, secondary school for women. The school is sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The school is located in Bel-Nor, a suburb of St. Louis, in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Louis.

History

In 1932, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word opened the all-girls high school in response to a need for the education of young women. The first year, the school enrolled thirty-five students. Three additional buildings and seventy-five years later, the school is now home to over six hundred students. [1]

Athletics

Cheerleading, soccer, volleyball, and basketball are sports in which the school has won state championships.[citation needed] The school also offers a variety of sports including softball, tennis, golf, cross country, track, dance, and swimming. Also, a recent addition to the plethora of Incarnate sports is the wizarding phenomenon Quidditch. With Kayla Pulley as seeker and Anne Rakowiecki as keeper (the Dynamic Duo, "aka"ed as the Redhead and the Darkie), Incarnate's team defeated both the Ravenclaw and Slytherin Quidditch teams. They hope to win the Quidditch Cup this year, with the additional prize of seven free tickets to the Weird Sisters concert. Also, there will be a party at the Three Broomsticks thrown in their honor with free butterbeer for all!

Tradition

Incarnate has many traditions which are unique to the school. Every homecoming, the four grades compete against each other to gather 'spirit points,' with the grade with the most points eventually winning the 'spirit stick.' The competitions are: trivia, the Big Sit, Junior vs. Senior Powderpuff game, Freshmen vs. Sophomore Cage Ball game, wall decorating, and dress out points. The Saturday of homecoming, the entire senior class toilet papers every junior's house, and vice-versa. Another tradition is the OBA, or Outstanding Black Achievers, assembly, which includes speeches, readings, skits, dance, and step. Finally, Senior Sensation is a series of skits in which the senior class makes fun of teachers, school policies, and other humorous subjects.
