Oakland is a census-designated place located in within the Town of Oakland, Kennebec County in the U.S. state of Maine. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,758.

Geography

Oakland is located at 44°32′25″N 69°43′19″W / 44.54028°N 69.72194°W / 44.54028; -69.72194Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.27% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,758 people, 1,149 households, and 728 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 197.6/km² (511.4/mi²). There are 1,318 housing units at an average density of 94.4/km² (244.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.15% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,149 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $32,700, and the median income for a family is $40,292. Males have a median income of $33,281 versus $25,326 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $20,741. 12.2% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
